SL350... SL350 Night edition
Discussion
Dont know why BUT I have a nagging little minime sitting on my shoulder whispering into my ear.......Go on buy one.....go on...
Should I?
Since returning to the UK and having too much time on my hands and about 10k to spend, I have bought n sold. An MGB, a Chim, Boxster S and now a TR7....BUT I liked the oldness of the MGB, Chim and TR7, I found the S a bit bland... but miss the oomph of the Chim and S... and maybe a bit of bling as well.
So that brings me here, and the SL. My Mrs had an SLK320, went like stink but always felt it was a ...........well lots not go there today eh.
But now the 350. I think the 500 would be wasted on me....but now they are around for well under £10k. Theres a nice looking one in Saltash around £6k and a Night edition in Torquay for just over £11k. But new shape............wish that little voice would shut up.

I’ve got a new shape (ie facelifted 2010) SL350.
Highly recommended- go for it. Got it about 18
Months ago off an old retired gent who had just got a Honda Jazz. Immaculate, unmarked, full history, factory AMG kit, kept under a cover in a garage. 10k. Ridiculous money. It was half my budget but I simply couldn’t see any reason to look any further. Probably one of the best buys I’ve ever made.

Wow. Are you and my minime related!! LOL. Thoughts on the Torquay car??

I’ve previously had a 500 and being the earlier model it had less power than the later 350 (the 350 is 315, the older 500 is 306) not to mention being lighter.
The 350 also benefits from not having ABC which for me was a wallet draining ballache. There were the struts, tandem pump, valve blocks and sensors all to consider, as well as flushes of the not cheap fluid.
The extra simplicity makes them a pretty safe bet, imo. They’re nothing more than a giant sized SLK, and I’ve found those to be bombproof - we’ve had a total of seven SLKs and SLs (currently we have an SL and and SLK 350) and they’ve been great apart from the 500.

My Mrs had a slk 320 so am aware of the suspension and water ingress issues. I think I would prefer 2006 on for the 3.5 more power, but dont want the 500.

That aftermarket head unit install is a bit of a dogs breakfast, and the cup holders have been damaged and a chunk of leather off the dash. Annoying. I was going to fit a CarPlay head unit (I ended up aborting the idea and sold it to a mate) - I just use a tune2air Bluetooth adapter into the multimedia interface. Gives me Waze and streaming choons.
A cpl of comments on faceache about the 350. A few have mentioned about the tax doubling in 2006. But then again, the car went down from 3.7 to 3.5 litres and power up from 240 to 270. Is that leap worth it? Then with the new nose etc power up again in 2012 to over 300 bhp. Now is THAT the car i should be looking at......Like this one.....

That’s the same as mine with the AMG pack. Both those you have listed are 315bhp (red trim on the engine). If it’s an R230 with the new nose then the 350 is 315bhp. If in doubt bung the reg into totalcarcheck https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204279818253?hash=item2...
This one looks nicer than the other one IMO.

Doesn’t matter; that model is 315bhp.
I'm not arguing here. I;m a happy camper. All I can find is that the revised 230 is 302bhp.....Is it because its AMG or???Just have to decide what car to get!!! re you happy with yours? Is there anything I shoukd be looking at apart from the obvious ...(I have owned an SLK).......

Water leaks and the roof working properly would be the standouts. Gearbox works smoothly.Just have to decide what car to get!!! re you happy with yours? Is there anything I shoukd be looking at apart from the obvious ...(I have owned an SLK).......

I had the worlds most disastrous SL500 previously and most of the really bad points (ie suspension) aren’t on the 350. The facelift model is meant to be much more robust electronically- the only thing wrong with mine is the heated rear window doesn’t work. I’ve not investigated that yet. Service items are pretty cheap.
As I mentioned - I kept the original COMAND - same as in that second car. I then got a multimedia adapter that goes into the socket in the centre armrest and a Tune2Air Bluetooth adapter. That way I can stream my Spotify, use Waze etc. with steering wheel controls.
Mine is my favourite car I’ve ever had - and the cheapest since I was a student. Road tax is a bit eye watering though.

The old round lights have started to date now, I think. There are a few other touches like a more modern steering wheel and a few other dash changes. The road tax is a pisser though at £695.
I’d also consider your colour choice - although it’s absolutely your decision. Black cars are a total nightmare - Mrs DS previously had a silver SLK200 which really looked clean all the time, her current one is black and looks great when just cleaned. But only then. I’d not have one by choice.
My SL is a sort of gunmetal colour and that works well. There’s a really nice metallic blue and I once saw one in bright red with a pano roof and cream interior - that looked nuts.

Agree. thats why I have sort of maybe, made a decision which for me is monumentous.....and I am magnanamous in that...to look for the 2009> car. Colour tbd but i take onboard your thoughts re colour. I live in the country and ALL the roads are stty ALL the time...
Our SLK in Floriduh was white, but the roads etc were always clean.
BUT and its a bigger BUT than that BUT, its not glued in stone that an SL350 is then car for me. I know what it wont be and thats an mx5, boxster, s2000, z3/4 anything nissan or scandinavian, or german (aprt fro the obvs)....so that narrows it down to............

The early cars with the 3.5 litre engine which replaced the 3.7 had problems with the balancer shaft which is a very labour intensive fix for a very cheap part.
This affected the engines from 2006 to 2008 ish. The Mercedes forums will have a lot of info re this and can tell you the engine numbers to avoid, unless of course you find a car with evidence it has been sorted.
Just something to be aware of.
