SLK55 AMG - Couple of Q's

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying an R-171 SLK 55 AMG, but just want to check a couple of mundane points before I bother a garage for a test drive.

Firstly I'm just under 6ft, will there be enough headroom? Only asking as I didn't like a Mk.1 MX5 (similar dimensions to the SLK) when I test drove one ages ago and my eye level seemed to be aligned with the top of the windscreen surround which was a bit off-putting!

Also - do they get over speed bumps OK? There are loads near where I live

6ft R171 SLK55 owner here no issues with headroom with roof closed - there is a lot of height adjustment in the seat

Speed bumps are fine but ramps (multi storey carp arks can result in scuffs to the underside of the front bumper

Both me and Mrs DS are 6’3” - she is more leg (37” inside leg) but neither of us have any issues with headroom in any of the SLKs (we have had all three, currently she has an R171).

The only place she does notice is when she’s in the passenger seat, as the front, diagonal bit of floor where your feet go has the audio gateway under it, so you lose some room.

I am 6 foot 2" and 20 stone and I fit in fine. In fact I am awaiting knee replacement surgery and have the seat set higher than I need to aid in getting in and out. The 55 is one of AMGs special cars and probably the last time we will see a car this small with an engine that big. Secondry cat and resonator box removal with an x pipe is how the car should have come from the factory. Buy one you will love it.

I think you are right on that - it's unlikely to be repeated

My advice having done that is do one or the other not both - it's just a bit obnoxious with both done - no drone or anything like that which is great but it's just too loud for my tastes - I actually made the secondary cats, resonatpr and pipework swapable (just in case) so my intention is to add a couple of small silencers in with the X-Pipe assembly to take the edge off the sound - I might like it more then

They’re great cars. I’ve had mine a year and may sell it before the summer. Why might you ask if it’s such a great car? I need 4 seats and if I’m honest, It’s too fast for the roads near where I live down south. It has monster torque and strains at the leash raring to go. And the noise

I chose it over a gen II Boxster S and don’t regret it, but I’ll probably buy a 997.1 to replace it.

If you don’t need 4 seats there are very few cars that can match it for theatre, luxury and speed.

They are super little cars. That engine is comical in such a s small body.

Speed bumps are a bit of a pain as the car is quite small and reasonably low and stiff. Those square ones that stuck up in the middle of the lane are particularly annoying.

I do find myself preferring routes without speed bumps in a way I don’t bother doing in other cars.
