Driving the brilliant Maybach S580- supreme luxury
Discussion
I now acknowledge that I am a complete failure.
I have not managed to take over some small oil-rich country and become its supreme potentate for life. That way I could be driven around by my chauffeur in a Maybach S580.
I have always bought drivers’ cars, more performance stuff. While I have driven a lot of luxury cars from Benzes to Bentleys (never a Rolls, though), the S580 is a magnificent beast. It is a car to be driven in rather than to drive. External finish is flawless with handpainted pinstripes.
Stepping into the rear passenger compartment I sit in some of the most comfy seats imaginable with huge legroom. Infinitely adjustable with massage, cooling and built in auxiliary speakers to augment the best Burmeister sound system I have ever heard. I have a Burmeister in a Porsche but it is nothing like this.
A casual wave closes the enormous door which is gesture sensitive. All is silent. I can fully recline, or sit up and get my fold out table to work on, or grab my removable iPad. Perhaps I might feel like some chilled champagne from the fridge, grab the fitted glasses and put them into their slots which immediately extend clips to prevent the glasses from spilling.
The quality of the leather and the metal of the door controls are all superbly bespoke. I do not want to drive the car but to move in and live in it
However, of course I eventually want to drive it. Equally comfortable driver’s seat. ;light but very accurate steering, and amazingly tight turning circle because of the 4WS. It feels more manoeuvrable than my Panamera. It is very quick but everything is set up for smoothness, muted engine note when floored.
In the end, it just feel boorish to floor it anyway, and might upset the tranquility of the boss in the back seat. I tried a Maybach GLS 63 a while ago and it just seemed like a regular Mercedes with a few upgrades.
This is not that way at all. It is without a doubt the most luxurious car I have personally experienced.
It does have an amazing number of Maybach badges. If anyone knows of an opening for a potentate, let me know.

God that's an ugly car, but I do really like it at the same time. I guess in the same way I look at superyachts, private jets or multi-million pound mansions. Most not really to my taste and an unnecessary, sometimes vulgar excess, but also fascinating, and a real showcase of engineering.
We were in NY on hols in September. Most 'taxi' limousines were Lincoln Navigator, Chevy Suburban etc. In the financial district the Maybach outnumbered the S-Class Mercedes by about 3:1 and there were lots if them. I saw an occasional Bentley and didn't see a single Rolls.
- Edited to add that they actually look impressive in the skyscraper setting - and noticeably different to the S-Class.

Agreed on the excess, though I think it is not bad looking for a limousine. I cannot imagine any situation including a massive lottery win where I would want to buy one, but when you sink your head back into the butter soft throw cushion and stretch out it is quite s special experience. The finish is just spectacular.Gassing Station | Mercedes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
