Anyone able to recommend a good set of winter tyres for my 2003 CLK240 please?

It's currently on original 17" alloys but I've just bought a spare set of 16 X 7J ET31 alloys that I'm told will fit, which I want to put winter tyres on so I can swap wheels over each year.
I'm told that 205/55 R16 tyres can be fitted all round to these?

I think the second half of the manual will have quite a bit of information on wheel/tyre sizes. I suspect that the UK OEM fitting for 16" was 205/55/16 on the front and 225/50/16 on the rear. 205/55/16 all-round will be quite a bit cheaper than 225/50/16 on the rear.

My 2003 CLK has Dunlop winter tyres on 16 inch rims. They’re 205 width and coped admirably with last year’s conditions.

They were on the car when I bought it, but 205 55 16 tyres are readily available and pretty cheap to buy, all things considered.

I don’t really use mine in the summer (300SL weather), but love the car.

I run winter tyres all year round but will be switching to All Season tyres next time.

Anyway, I have an E280 Sport (on 18" rims) and have had Yokohama, Vredestein and Conti winter tyres. The Yokohamas were quiet but wore very quickly and I wouldn't bother again. Vredesteins were a good price and wore well right up until they started delaminating. The Contis have been the best of the bunch, quiet, decent grip (not that I drive it in a way to test the limits) and wear has been good as well.

I used a set of Nokian Wintercraft Wp71s on My CLk and they made a hell of a difference. Reasonably priced too.

The traction control light barely flickered and the ABS rarely buzzed, even in quite hard packed snow. I managed to pick up a spare set of Adaharaz aloys top pop them on, for £150. They seem to wear really well, too, lasting three seasons before I sold the CLK. The wheels and tyres were bought by a guy with a C208.
