My son has just bought a s/h Merc and has tried to sign up to Mercedes Me.
But the car is still registered to the previous owner. His name and email address is still shown in the car's menu.

My son seems to think that the only way around this is to get it cleared by a Merc dealer?

Can this be correct? Sounds like an unnecessary faff.

Yeah, will likely need to be dealt with by Mercedes otherwise people would just hijack others cars off the system.

Correct, you need to go into a dealer with the V5 and ID (driving licence), it only takes 5 mins but its a bit of a pain.

Thanks for the replies.
Presumably it’s a daily request for dealers and someone can do it without ‘booking it in’ .

Based on my experience of Mercedes dealerships I would ring ahead and make sure there is someone available for you to talk to. Walking in to the dealership can often be met with blank stares and people not at desks.

Last question: do they need the car to be there to do whatever they do? It's temporarily off the road.

Don’t think so, I did have mine with me but the update was done by the service guy behind the desk not at the car..
