I have relocated to Hong Kong and need to take my CLS63S AMG Shooting Brake with me - the now-extinct body shape and the superb 5.5L V8 M157 engine are both too rare to just sell and leave behind. Since this was my personal car in the UK, until a month ago it could have be exempted from meeting the latest emissions standards (HK is currently testing to Euro 6C), but that exemption has since been terminated by the local authorities without warning.

I now have to find a way to detune the M157, which is already compliant with the original Euro 6 emissions standard, to meet the more stringent Euro 6C NOx requirements. I will then have to test it in the UK by a recognised tester, submit the report to the local authorities, before I can even think about putting it on a ship. They will then re-test in HK upon arrival, 6 weeks apart, and the reports better match up or the car is going back. Of course, I know this will impact both performance and drivability, but that bridge can be crossed once the car is over here.

I am looking for UK-based M157 tuning experts, either someone who has proven track record in re-programming the ECUs specifically to meet emissions requirements, or a combination of software changes and additional / replacement filtering hardware in the exhaust system to get NOx levels below the Euro 6C limits. Any referrals or offers to help will be gratefully received!

A quick look suggests that Euro 6 emissions levels are the same as 6c - the difference appears to be in the testing methodology.

It may be worth getting the car tested as a first step to figure out whether or not it would already pass using the 6c driving test, and how much headroom you have.

One other avenue may be worth looking at is are companies offering products to retrofit to cars to bring them up to emissions standard, e.g high efficiency cats - the addition of one of these if they exist could bring you within the emissions standards without detuning. Just a thought.

Yep - that's a good call. I need to figure out where to get it tested in the UK against Euro 6C.

I guess the same considerations for tuning a car for outright performance gains apply here - butcher the exhaust system to add/swap out OEM parts, or do it via software. I have always taken the view that software is less intrusive but if an added piece of hardware does the same trick here, I would rather not mess with all the computers!

MSL performance in Birmingham seem to be the go to place for M157 tuning so presumably they could detune it too or maybe give you a switchable map that allows detune and full tune options...
