This has taken ages, needed ferries (twice! Thanks P&O! mad ), hotels and a bit of a roadtrip - on the upside apart from today it was a mini heatwave so there was plenty of top down cruising.

I’d originally wanted an SL, but was going to go for a Cayman as I wanted to be able to transport my MTBs on holiday. Then Caymans got silly money so I got a facelifted R230. I’ve seen people on forums attaching things to boot lids with straps, Saris bones things resting on the metal - no thanks!!! Then I spotted a place in Apen, Germany who did a towbar - technically a bike rack adapter, as the car isn’t type approved for towing. Basically it’s a detachable towbar (with a nobble on to prevent trailer use). Only problem - they won’t send it, they have to supply and fit.

Very nice company, lovely lady there who arranged everything and they even had a loan car so we went to the naval museum in Wilhelmshaven for the day. It’s all TüV approved with a raft of documentation and conformity papers. 60kg vertical load.

Anyway …. Sorted. A very unique and niche product.

AHK Preisbrecher, Apen, Germany. Including ferries, hotels, fuel etc it was a lot of money. However the car is a keeper and I’m sure I’m going to get a lot of use from it.

That’s what I call tenacity. Well done for getting exactly what you wanted.

It was hard work, booking all this stuff on the basis that all the parts would be there on the day etc and then the P&O fiasco (who we were booked with).

Well done for sorting this!

I've a slightly older SLK. Wonder whether they would have something for that too?

What option did you go for on their site? I'm struggling a bit as its not so user friendly...

Hi - they do them for SLKs.

You need to look under PKW Mercedes.

Be aware that you have to take your car to them. We made a mini-break of it. You get reams of all the proper TuV paperwork though.

Thanks for that! Saw it now, not cheap once all said and done.

I still need to get round to calling a dealer in either UK or DE to see whether its posisble to get hold of the original factory roof bars for SLK. I think those work out to ~Eur 400... maybe.

Mind you, the tow hook might be a better option for e-bikes, etc.
