SLK 172 - door unlocking woes (cant open door)
Discussion
Anyone seen this before? I have read about a common Merc problem where unlocking doors won't work as the pop up lock things (on top of door card) do not pop up. My issue is different as they pop up, but you then can't always open the door.
So if i blip the doors open, the pop up lock things come up, but you can't open the door. Happens 3 out of 5 times on passenger door, and has now happened twice on drivers side. Also noticed that from inside the car, if I press the central locking "unlock" button, the drivers door opens if I pull the interior handle, but the passenger cannot get out as the door will not open (locking then unlocking a few times seems to fix it)
Also bizarrely yesterday this happened......
Locked car with the blipper (car does not have proximity/touch sensitive access)
Realised i needed to grab a mask from the car, so unlocked the doors with the blipper
Put blipper on seat so I could grab the mask
Forgot to pick up the blipper and shut the door
5-10 seconds later realised my error so went back to car to get said blipper
Drivers door wouldn't open. Passenger door wouldn't open. Both had the little pop-up door lock things in the up (unlocked position). The boot could be opened, so the car wasn't "locked"
Got the wife to bring the spare blipper. Used it to first lock the doors (the pop-up lock things both went down), then pressed button to unlock (pop-up things came up again) and lo and behold the door could be opened and i could reclaim the blipper.
Help !!

I had the same issue with my W140. Sometimes had to lock, unlock, lock, unlock front doors to open. Progressively worsened. Door appeared to be unlocked (pusher up) but it wouldn’t open.
Resolved with liberal use of PTFE lubricant on the locking mechanisms.
Assuming your SLK is a similar design then the problem is a sticking lever; see blue circle. That’s the part you should be aiming to lubricate - you have to get into the gap, about an inch beyond where you can see.
If that doesn’t work then it’s door cards off and lock mechanisms out. Good luck!

just to close ths out, the garage pulled the passenger door card off and gave everything a clean and liberal squirt of wd40 but the passenger door would still only unlock occasionally. Had to get a new mechanism from MB which was £230 or so and now all seems well. However the drivers door is now failing 4 out of 5 times so looks like another expense to sort that one. Drivers side speaker behind ear was found to be dead so £40 for one of those (less than expected for MB) plus I had them replace the belt, transmission fluid and all other service items (even though it was actually an A service, I couldn't find any records of much having been done). So hopefully once the drivers door is sorted and I get some luggage to fit nicely in the boot we will be all set to go from Reims to Venice and then on to the F1 in Budapest
