I wonder how many other owners will be caught out by this.

Are these batteries recyclable? If not what is the likely disposal charge?

That makes for uncomfortable reading. However I thought the hybrid battery in those cars was akin to large conventional battery. It's located under the bonnet at the bulkhead rather than under the floorpan or the boot. So therefore easily accessed etc.
It's only got from memory 1-3 on electric only driving so not a sophisticated system.

Therefore I don't understand how it costs £15K to replace plus labour!
Unless that battery is unique shape or setup to that model? Due to economies of scale said battery wasn't produced much it's therefore pricey?

Can the car still drive with the ICE if said battery died and wasn't replaced or is it so integral the battery needs to work?

Automotive battery tech is still somewhat in its infancy. From the introduction of the ICE engine until fairly recently (last 30/40 years) people wouldn't have been surprised if an ICE engine only lasted 8 years before needing replacement or rebuilding.

It's only very recently that we've come to expect 20 year old, 100k+ mile cars to be like new

Jag I Pace battery is circa £27000.

I think you can change the individual cells if you are trained and equipped enough to drop the battery and work on a live HV system removing all the bus bars to remove the duff cell.

TBH if one cells dies from old age, the others are unlikely to be far behind, so the point where a new battery is higher than the residual value of the car is inevitable as it is with a ICE.

At least with ICE you can strip and rebuild an engine rather than completely replace.
