Specing New E Class Merc
Discussion
Anyone else get a bit frustrated by the lack of options available from Mercedes on the E Class? Just had a look on the German Mercedes configurator site and the options are huge. Different wood trims, wood finish steering wheel, far more options on seat finishes and colour, etc. Here for example there is no choice on dash finish. On my current E350e which is 4 years old I have really nice silver aluminium dash which I think lifts the otherwise black interior.
It however isn't an option now but is in Germany?! BMW, Audi and others allow plenty of scoop for specing what you want. Why Mercedes, why?
Just really bugs me. Rant over....

I agree, if I was paying new-car depreciation then I'd want the chance to choose every little detail and really make it 'my' car. I assume it helps Mercedes UK because they can bulk-order cars and sell from stock rather than each sale being a factory special order, but I'd want to make it 'special' for me by making my own choices.
Looking at the configurator, there are some choices. It looks like the dash trims and options vary by 'model'. On the 300e there is an 'AMG Line', and 'AMG Line Edition' and an 'AMG Line Night Edition', each with different colour dash trim material. So there is a little bit of choice, albeit limited and grouped with various other changes you might not want.
I guess technically a silver dash trim is an option on the E-class. It's just a rather expensive option at about nineteen grand over the 300e, although it does come in an "option package" with a few other nice things like an AMG straight six:
Other than stepping up to the E53, you could try with Munich or Ingolstadt, if they offer more choice. In the old days I heard of buyers ordering cars RHD from Continental dealerships and bringing them in as it was cheaper, no idea if that's still possible post-Brexit or if you could actually access the wider choice of options by so doing.
Or alternatively you could just hang on to the E-class you already have, with the interior you like.

It's frustrating that we get so few choices. At the end of 2019 I tried to order an Emerald Green E-Class Coupe with Saddle Brown leather, only to be told that Emerald Green had been dropped for 2020MY.
Looking at the German configurator, I can see it's still available over there. Shame as it's really nice combination, and I had to accept a compromise.
It's been like this for many years with MBUK restricting the number of options, whether it was trim, wheels or grilles etc., it's just that it seems even more restricted now that the tend to offer the option packages which irritates me as if you want just one of the items you gave to have others you might not want. You'd often see models/combinations on the continent that simply weren't available in the UK.
It will be interesting to see whether that changes in due course now that they've said they want to concentrate more on 'quality' than quantity (ie higher margins).

What MBUK have done drives me nuts. Over the years I've bought 4 (second hand) Mercs and it used to be easy. I'd basically choose the engine first (large & petrol), swerve the Elegances and look for an Avantgarde, Sport or AMG with a load of the options I wanted. It however isn't an option now but is in Germany?! Now it's Premium this, AMG-Line, Plus, Plus Plus, Murdered Out AMG Premium Sport Midnite Edition that...I counted 13 different variations and that was before you get to the four (four?!) proper AMG's.
I recently managed to find my mate a car and it was a right faff trying to work out all the trim combos. He wanted the a petrol or diesel hybrid and I eventually found him a nice 2018 E300e (the petrol one) "SE" with Airmatic. But when I did the VIN decoder thing I found that MB actually designate it as an having Avantgarde trim! MBUK have just made up the rest of the bollx.
Where it get worse is all the lumping together of things. Another mate recently bought a 2020 GLC. He wanted the pano roof, Burmeister and a few other things so he went for one of the Premium ones. The thing is, that comes with Sports suspension which he hates with a vengance.
In old money, he'd have bought an AG on upgraded rims with a pano and a few toys. But, no sir that's not available in the UK....
It's infuriating.

I generally have black Mercs been a funeral director and I like bright work on my cars, window surrounds, grill, etc. to lift the car, etc. But nearly every model has the 'Night Pack' now. Why does having the top spec model mean I have to have everything darkened?
I hate the trend to black out all the chrome. I don't mind if other people do it. But I don't want to be forced into it.I really don't understand what MB UK are up to. It all started when they stopped importing a lot of the decent petrols a few years ago. When the facelift came out they decided you could have an E200 or an E63 and nothing in between. WTAF?

Hmm increasing quality
There is nothing quality about my E it's rattle/creak/groan tastic
Hey mate, how are you doing? Changed your wheels yet? There is nothing quality about my E it's rattle/creak/groan tastic
Mine has not rattles or creaks of any kind, I know you said on my thread to look out for them, I have had the car 4 weeks now and covered 2k in it. The wife even feel asleep in it the other day as it is so quiet, even compared to my 2016 SE.

I’m not sure why they’d reduce options like this. Presumably they all come off the same line with the same set range of build options.
I’d be inclined not to buy a new E Class if they can’t give you what you’d want.
The range of options available for the German market is vast. Shame some of them aren't available here, although there are a few weird looking trim choices (MANUFAKTUR Interieur macchiatobeige/tizianrot at e5800)I’d be inclined not to buy a new E Class if they can’t give you what you’d want.

What happens if you press the center console with your knee or grab the door pull or press top of the door card? Are they silent? If so your very very lucky even all the new ones I've sat in recently all do it
Ok so have been out. In normal use or pressure no noise. If I press my leg up against the centre console hard then yes a creak like noise. Door pull and top of door card I can get a noise but have to overly try to. In everyday use it is fine,Edited by DamienCBR on Saturday 6th November 16:08
