I Need to buy us a second estate car/ workhorse , on paper a C250 CGI with about 90 k approx 2012 fits the bill,I am a BMW /Volvo man myself who’s handy with the spanners but I’d rather swerve the low spec 3 series Bmw,s with potential 2.0 cam chain issues and there aren’t many later petrol Volvos in our price range that aren’t gutless .

Are there any issues with the C class I need to be aware off ?

I suggest researching M271 engine timing chain problems and coming to a view as to whether the issue has been resolved in the car you are considering. Also, with it being a direct injection engine, it could potentially suffer from coking-up of the inlet valves.

Timing chain and / or gears wear.

Other issue that is coming up on MB forums all the time now is rear sub-frame failing - often 2008/9 cars but saw a post on a 2012 one today. They rot from the inside so it's not apparent until very late. Some people (inc the one I saw today) have had succes getting MB to replace them even without full dealer service history, but others have got nowhere and fund replacement themselves. It's a pretty big job.

Brake pipes rusting also seems to be issue on these cars (and on some othr MB models).

Thanks. For the replies , I’ve had a look at some of the subframe posts which surprised me a little as I thought Mercedes had overcome their 90,s rust issues . I guess if it’s going to fail it would of done by now or signs will be visible .Any idea why cam chains fail ?.
