2017 GLC android auto

Genuinely asking for a friend. Since I bought my 2019 GLC last year I couldn't get android auto to work in my car. However recently I left my phone plugged in the car while out walking all afternoon. On returning android is on the screen and has worked since. My friend has a 2017 and also cannot get android working, is there some auto install being rolled out by Mercedes? Is there anything he can do to push this?
