Hi,
Not posted on this forum before as I am a TVR nut (although my everyday car is a mercedes) love my TVR to bits but the lack of a rear seat is begining to cause problems, so I have been looking at late 1990's SL's with the rear seat. However when I recently visited our Mercedes dealer in Sheffield he told me that these rear seats where in fact illegal! Is this true? or is he just referring to the new shape SL? I appreciate they are not full size seats but are much better than some other 2+2's on the market, looked at the XK8 and the rear seats were a complete waste of space! Thanks for any advice, Simon.

Don't know about them being illegal, but in august 1990 they were a factory fitted cost option on a 500SL.

He wouldn't have been suggesting that you look at a more expensive CLK that he had available at the time, would he?

I had a 1989 500SL (W107) and the rear seats were ok for short journeys. The XJS and XK8 rear seats are for luggage only. The front seat had to butt up against them because the leg room in the front was no use. I still like the XJS cabrio though. You might want to consider a late E320 cabriolet - they had proper seats.
