That's a lovely motor. Is it in Hyacinth red or is it wrapped? Those are my fav wheels for the R231.
I've an R230 SL55 with performance package so pretty quick but I'd say yours would be lighter and quicker.

How is it drive? I'd love to do a side by side comparison of our two models but fear I'll be jealous biggrin

I've recently sold mine. Fabulous thing and so incredibly underrated in terms of handling and performance. It was an absolute monster with all that torque.

I think the early models had the option of a performance package that upped the torque and power which I think then became standard.

I'm considering selling my 55 and might look at a 63 in the future but more likely a 500 with a tune in it. I know there's a big difference between it and AMG model so I'll see what the prices are like.

Correct on the first part. They had 537bhp/590ft lbs as standard. The Bhp increase is modest on the PP but the torque jumps to 664 ft lbs.

I would say that the standard car doesn't need any more torque because it'll happily spin its wheels in 3rd and sometimes 4th, but I also wouldn't pay a premium for the performance that a PP gives, given that a remap will take you far higher anyway.

Who do you recommend for tuning and what sort of output can be achieved?

Yes please, that’s looks lovely.

Jupiter Rot? It reminds me of an old CLA SB I had, the colour, not the car obviously!

MSL in bham seem to be the go-to tuner.

I did phrase it badly, but many people have preconceptions of them just being a big wafter and don't understand how wide their bandwidth is.

From my personal experience, try telling the M-power fans that you bought one over an M4/M6 because you thought it was significantly quicker and more fun to drive, or that you Px'd an Elise for one!

Yes sure. As for M car owners - the MB has class, whereas.... . biggrin

Incidentally one doesn't have to travel to MSL and pay their inflated prices for a simple tune. A few years ago I had my bi-turbo (E class) taken to 700 bhp/lbft by a tuner in South Manchester for less then £500.

Fair enough.

FWIW MSL quoted me £495 or £595 with before/after dyno runs a few months ago.

That's not bad, I was quoted over £1000 for the full-on remap. MSL maps were renown for their cost back then... .

Yeah I know what you mean and BMW engines seem to like breaking and gulping oil too. The SL is a great all rounder, GT wafter in soft suspension mode and roof up. Drop the hard roof and you've the wind in hair GT. Arrive at destination fresh, unload capacious boot and start your holiday.

Also able to do track events, albeit an Elise would probably be superior but can't do the GT role.

I'd like to know if any of you have also driven an R230 especially the 55 and how do they compare/contrast? Also how are they for water ingress? The 230 can leak badly enough at times.

These are on my radar along with the 500 version, I expcect I'll sell my Alpine in the next month and have a deposit on an Emira so looking for something inbetween.

I had an R129 for 5 years and loved the whole SL experience albeit a significantly older car obviously. What are the key things to look out for on these? Suspension and roof leaks?

I didn't really encounter much in the way of evidence of issues with either. The general consensus seemed to be that the ABC suspension on the R231 is much more robust than the earlier models.

Front brakes are very expensive. Mine didn't have the HK audio, electric wind deflector nor Magic Sky roof. The only one I think I would pay extra for is the HK. The standard set up was quite lacking.

JayEmm did a review of one a few months ago om his YT channel and was very complimentary.

Yeah I saw that, he seemed quite taken with it. When you say front brakes are expensive, is that the discs or pads also?

I was trying to track down some discs but they were pretty pricy. I can't remember the exact figures now but they were over a grand. I couldn't seem to find any non-OEM pattern parts.

Thanks, that is a bit on the heavy side.
