How do you fit 1963 Mercedes 190SL headlight clips

Hi,
I have just spent almost 4 hours trying to fit the clips that hold the headlight to the rim on my bosses 190SL. The results other than copious expletives, sore fingers and the loss of two clips is Zero!
Unfortunately, the car was purchased at auction and came with the lenses siliconed into place, so I have no reference to work from.
I have managed to get the clips into place on the rim, but despite what seems like a lot of tension on the clips it doesn't seem to hold the lens securely. Also as a put the rim back on the car and try to tighten ( even very slightly) the retaining screw the clips just fly off again.
Help!!
