Having tested the new S Class yesterday (current S63 owner) to see if it was something we’d move the on to, we found it has definitely moved things on but in the base model guise it is far to cocooned from whats going on outside, i know thats the point of the S but it was too much for me, same as was the old std car for me though which is why i plumped for the AMG version.

I absolutely love our current car and i’m reluctantly having to look at moving on from it so the move has to be a good one and the std car from yesterday isnt it so i’m now thinking the S63 W222 in cabrio as i think we can get away with the seat in the back as its only for the dogs, going to test this and the AMG GT 4 tomorrow as we have the GTC roadster for track and love that but not sure on how S like in comfort the GT4 will be..

Long story to get to question! but, has anyone seen any spy shots or heard anything about wether or not mercedes are going to make a coupe version of the new S class? if yes, then i guess a cabriolet version would be shortly thereafter?

Any pointers would be interesting and appreciated..

Hi Leroy, unfortunately not as your link confirms. I think this is a great pity as traditionally they have complimented the S class range over the decades.

I think slow sales coupled with massive depreciation to the initial owners are largely to blame. Competition is much stronger too than in years past. The likes of Bentley, Rolls, AM etc have great products.

The W222 and it's variations have had great reviews and the W223 looks to be following that but with a slightly controversial design mix. The underpinnings etc seem to trump the criticisms of the cabin's trinketiness. Coupe and cab versions would be the icing on the cake.

I think MBs focus is on EV models like the EQS which seems like a game changer and a serious Tesla threat.

Good luck in your search, you've some nice cars in which to wait out the decision period.

Its pretty much what the salesman said but didnt say they were definitely ‘not’ and to keep an eye on skpy shots, looking around the internet leads me to think they are’nt however.

EQS yes, they’re focusing efforts on this and we waited with baited breath, 99% sure we were going to order, based on the interior (still a win) with the exterior (even if 90% close to concept) concept looks being spot on.

unfortunately the exterior appearance is closer to some current cars than the mercedes concept! so we withdrew our interest, still trying to find if there’s a physical car in the uk to go and see in the hope that it doesnt photo well and that its physical presence changes our minds, maybe..

I think we’d still add the C/A217 though as some trips with the dogs could be in this to, + i discovered this morning that the euro model you can have a tow hitch on the back which means a bike rack for 2 is possible, with the boot (roof down) being big enough for hand luggage bags, love that idea smile

I think the GT 4 door would need to be very very good in the comfort stakes to pull us away from the S cabrio though.

The S cabrio would be a fabulous ride. It's interesting about the tow bar, I'd assumed that wouldn't be possible but that converts it into a much more versatile car.

People default to SUVs these days and I've no issues with that, because they need practicality few days a year. However they have downsides the rest of the time. Height, weight, thirst, reduced agility.

Post up a pic of the car with the bike rack for us to enjoy. Take care.
