My wife has just booked her GLC43 in for its third year service and been quoted over £600 for what is an A service.

Am I missing something here or is this just an oil service? Seems utterly bonkers to me.

What year is it? It could need additional but scheduled work.

If you booked / try to book online it should confirm the above e.g. auto box oil service

2018 - it doesn’t appear to even get an air filter included for £601.

Put the reg etc into https://www.mymercedesservice.co.uk/ and it should give you all the details.

Thanks - SUV. The Service Config. Shows the 601 amount.

I can only assume they bump the price up to make the monthly service plans more appealing to keep you in the dealer network.

So what work does it show in addition to the basic service?

The rack rate prices have always been high. What’s changed is the dealers used to be up for a haggle.

No surprise to me.

Does it have a pan roof? - that is (or was) a 3-year lubrication additional item. I think they've changed the service schedule slightly on some models, from what I've seen recently, however, an A-service (every other year, starting year 1) is basically an oil and filter change.

As has been touched on, service rates have been on an ever-increasing trajectory for years now, IMHO designed to encourage people to sign up to the monthly service plans, which they have been doing in droves.

I had a look using a random 18 reg GLC43 and put the mileage as 40K miles (it was last serviced at 30K).

My local dealer comes out at £710!

Additional work is:
Replace dust filter £36.72
Replace air filter element £102.24
Replace spark plugs £222.60

The basic A service is £348. Pretty mental for an oil and filter change and a few checks.

The car I used has a sunroof but it doesn't mention it in the work. The ESS https://lite.servicemercedes.co.uk/ess/pc/ certainly calls for it every 31K or 3yrs. Perhaps MyService assumes it was done last time - the system has always been a bit unreliable for additional work.

Much as it grates, if keeping the car and you want to have it dealer serviced it'd probably be worth looking at a three service ServiceCare package as the next service is a B, plus brake fluid and then at 5yrs it will likely need the ATF. Check the ATF interval though - I got caught with mine where they briefly changed to sealed-for-life so old ServicePlus plan I had wouldn't cover it, and you get caught out if they say they only go on mileage and you haven't done enough.

On my 2017 GLC350d the first service was £400, the second was £400 and the third was £800. After the third service I did buckle and I joined the monthly service plan. It's just been for it's fourth service and that involved the gearbox fluid change(because it has done 80k miles(I think it's 77k miles or 5 years) and I think that is a pricey service so in some ways I was pleased that I was on the plan.

Whichever way you cut it though Mercedes main dealer servicing is very expensive I reckon. They quoted me over £400 to change the rear discs/pads(it only needed pads but they won't change them on their own) so I took it to my local garage to change the rear pads(£100). It is still on the original front discs/pads(at 80k miles I think is pretty good though but they are getting close to needing changing). The front discs look pretty meaty so I'm guessing that they won't be cheap to change(needless to say the main dealer won't be doing them!).

ETA...just realised it's last service(including the gearbox oil) was actually it's fifth service because of the miles, so I've had two services on the monthly service plan.

That's almost cheap for what should have been a B service, but if, due to your mileage, it was done well before 2yrs then the car wouldn't have had the 2yr brake fluid change, which would have been over £100, and they may not have changed the pollen filter.

If such things bother you, you have to watch additional work if the time/mileage is anything other than "normal". You can find, with things like brake fluid, that if your 3rd service was at say, 2.5yrs, the service system might not call for it to be changed because it assumes it was done at 2yrs.
