Hi

About to take delivery of a w205 C63 on a 16 plate which is out of warranty... im starting to think it was a bad idea. After a string of BMW's i have took the plunge a MB and whilst the web doesnt have many horror stories i cant help but be a little bit worried my bank balance may take a hit outside of fuel and tyre costs

Please convince me otherwise LOL

Congrats, awesome! I don't believe these are particularly bork-prone, not worth spoiling your enjoyment worrying about it. That would be like going to a Michelin starred restaurant and then spending the whole evening worrying about your cholesterol!

Best thing is to try and find a good independent specialist not too far away, that way you've got someone to take it to to check it over, if you get any worrying noises, and when it needs servicing. I hear good things about https://www.derrickwells.com/ , how far are they from you?

Cheers, it will be fine im sure biggrin

That garage is about 35mins on a good run, with a poorly c63 it might be longer... LOL

Either way the garage im buying from are putting it into MB for a health check, it also has full MB history which helps.

Excited, but will be my first car out of warranty

I'll be following this thread with interest if you keep posting. I'm currently lookong to change from my W204 to a W205 estate. My head is saying C43 for the daily useability and the 4matic. My heart is saying C63 because V8.

This!

A mate has a W205 C63s. It's thrown a pricey issue recently, but not usually seen in this country from what I understand. He's ran it (fairly hard at times) for 3 years now and it's been pretty bullet proof.

From what I understand, both the W204 and W205 C63s are fairly under stressed in standard form. I've certainly not seen any big issues reported that hasn't been caused by lack of maintenance or driving like a tool etc...

Enjoy the car and leave a little sat in reserve for repairs and I'm sure it will be a rewarding car.

Personally, I'd stick the £3k in the bank.

I won't say anything about Derek Wells but if you are near Stowmarket you need to use Alex Crow, one of the most respected Merc Indys in these parts and you will never hear a bad word said about him.

Cheers - I don't have personal experience (yet) so glad of the input :-)

I have used Alex on quite a few occasions and youn won't find a more knowledgable and trustworthy guy.

DW when I last talked to them was no cheaper than the main dealer and more recently I have heard some less than complimentary comments on their service levels.

I still have 9 months left to pay on the W204 and then my budget will be £30k + my trade in. I can't imagine that's going to stretch to a C63s. More a standard C63 and a reputable remap.

No 1-year warranty from where you bought it?

Just a few months warranty im afraid and one where they will sort out the invoice direct with the garage rather than with a provider. They are a good garage and sell some top marques so im not concerned about them paying for repairs its just after this point when i get a little nervous.

All my previous cars that are mostly BMW have been in the garage for some sort of warranty work... i fear it will be the same with the MB

My standard C63 coupé coming up to 3 years ownership from new now and with nearly 9k on the clock, has indeed been in for warranty work, just once a few months back with a failed lambda sensor.

Fairly basic job to replace, wouldn't have been expensive if it was out of warranty.

~

Ironically, of the 3 cars I've had from new, the only one that didn't have any warranty work done on it was the BMW - an M235i. In fact, all the second-hand BMWs I had before the M235i all ran without a single issue too - I've generally found BMW to be pretty bullet-proof.

Iv not had a 205 but the 204, took it to 8 years old and 45k miles and only issue I had was a bonnet sensor (£12 for new one) and a cracked alloy which was a common issue on the 204 19’s (£600 for new one) other than that it ran perfect.

C63S owner here - and had no real issues except for a couple bits of trim (those lower black-out things below the doors) and the sun roof broke. Covered under warranty, but these are W205 issues, not exclusive to the AMG models!

From what I understand, the bi-turbo V8 is solid. I havent heard of any major issues or broken engines. In fact, it seems that some light remapping or tuning is perfectly fine, but once you go over 15% or so gains in power do you need to make internal changes etc. Takes well and is still solid and reliable! The engine itself is used in so many different cars and in different levels of tune, so widespread and common in reality.

A quick scan of the forums show that any issues are pretty simple (though the cost for an hours labor will be expensive). I personally havent heard of a grenaded engine, but the limp modes seem relatively common, but easily solved. Is it a risk? Of course, any high HP car is going to be a risk, but its a lower risk than most.

Oh, and please note that suspension setup and tires can be expensive. They can eat tires if you arent careful and the setup of the suspension can cause issues - crabbing and AMG's have that pretty aggressive toe-in on. So check it all, have it aligned regularly and check your tires. But relatively common W205 issues.
