Just browsing through the A Class configurator this morning and noticed that a new A180d seems to have reverted back to a 2.0 diesel (114bhp). Anyone know if they have dropped the Renault 1.5 motor? Seems odd in this day and age to move away from the smaller engine!

The have also switched all the 'cheaper' trims/engines to torsion beam from multi-link suspension.

They have dropped the Renault diesel units and replaced them with Merc’s own 1950cc OM654 which first appeared in the 2016 in the W213 E Class and is now in the facelift C Class.

Whilst they are larger displacement, they are very efficient and were designed to comply with all the latest and upcoming emissions requirements. The 180d starts at 115BHP and the same engine goes up to the 300d with 245BHP and various outputs in between.

Mercedes spent a lot on development of these and they will eventually replace all 4 cylinder diesels in everything from the A Class to the Sprinter.

I imagine they have a st load of them out the back they need to shift. Though it's an OK engine and an improvement on the ancient 2143cc it replaced in the c/e.

Though newly mating a larger displacement diesel to a city car with a torsion beam rear screams backwards step parts bin special. Easily sold to people too blinded by the brand to care though.

Great, thanks all. Very useful 👍 Interesting to note they have changed to a cheaper suspension setup too!

I think its to be expected now, I can't imagine they'll be selling loads of them any time soon. Volvo did something similar a few years ago when they introduced a single 2.0l unit in various states of tune.

I've been running a Renault engined a180d for 18 months now and its not a bad unit for the size of car, granted doesn't set pulses racing but its not really intended to.
