Took delivery of my wifes new slk 280 on Wednesday, we ordered it with the seven speed auto box, with manual controls on the steering wheel. on collection I remarked to the salesman that the steering wheel controls were missing, he repilied that they were only fitted to the 350. On checking the brochure and the Mercedes website it states that the seven speed auto box comes with gearshift buttons on the steering wheel on both the 280 and the 350 (£1770 extra). The dealership has since supplied 2 more 280's, both without steering whell buttons. I have told the dealership that it clearly states that wheel buttons are included in the brochure and website, he agrees.

How do I stand legally, I have ordered a car thinking that I was getting something, but have not received it, can they just say it was a printing error? I only ordered auto because of the paddle shift option

I can understand your frustration because you ordered and paid for something that was not there when the item arrived. On that basis you should receive a refund for the missing items or reject the complete item.

In reality you will probably only use the steering wheel shifters in the first week and then get bored with it and use it just like a normal auto.

I just bought a 911 Tip and have used it mainly as a regular auto.

Mercedes have now replied that they have forgotten to put the manual control on the car, they have offered £250 as conpensation, I have told them that this is unacceptable and that I will require the car to be replaced with a new one.

A standard steering wheel retails at £585.39, steering wheel with buttons retails at £987.89, that's just for the wheel, ignoring fitting, software etc. £250 seems a little adrift to me. Also, will Mercedes start supplying your car with the buttons eventually ? If they do, yours will be quite unattractive come resale time.

My dealer has since told me that the first 100 280slk were built without the buttons, the say it is a simple job to change the steering wheel, alter the software to include the manual option, what do you think?

It's not called agro Mustard. It is getting what you paid for, factory fitted, tested and knowing software will work reliably.

Ok, may have to wait for re-order but can get some goodies in compensation for the wait , inconvenience etc: ie extras on car or free service when due

Got to learn how to hustle out there

My wife has a 280 on order for October, and is opting for the 7-speed with 'buttons' on steering wheel.. have you any update since last post?? Wife will be speaking to the dealer about her car..

As has been said earlier, just not acceptable, hope you got some additional recompense..

Apart from the steering wheel, how is your wife getting on with the car?

still waiting for decision from mercedes as to if they are going to replace the car, but we are more than pleased with the 280, excellant all round car, she had sl350 before, prefers the slk. Cannot see why everyone raves about the airscarf; we could live without it.

It's August! It will make a lot more sense on a crisp sunny spring morning.

I'd accept the wheel swap and software reconfig. Just not worth waiting for another car to be built. BTW, hope it's better to use than the SL55 buttons which are just nastily weighted micro-switches. A DB9 paddle shift it is not!

asked our local dealer about the steering wheel problem - they suggested there could have been an error when your original order was input into the MB order system - the SLK 'price list' mentions two codes - 427/428. Apparantly 427 is for the steering wheel and 428 is for the buttons...... Hope this is of some use...

The airscarf will come into its own on cooler days !!

Personally I would take the money. Have driven several with the buttons over the past year and consistently changed down when I wanted to go up. Reason - our German friends decided to have a rocker switch on both sides of the steering wheel rather than one for up and t'other for down. Net result anything other than having the wheel dead centre and you lose track of which way the rocker goes. Trust me selecting 1st as you try to hit 3rd is very unpleasant....take the money but push for a free 1st service as well.

I was thinking about an SLK280 or an M3 SMG.

In the current Merc price list the paddles are a further £200 option, in additon to the 7GTronic Auto.

And the Merc dealer I spoke to has no idea if it compares with the M3 SMG. Obviously goes around with eyes and ears tightly shut regarding competing manufacturers.

Tried both. It's like chalk and cheese.

With the SMG I drove you could alter the rate of change from "slushy around town" to "neck snapping". Loads of fun.

The SLK was the usual "auto-'box but we give you buttons to play with" tripe. Fine if you like autos.
