Firstly, to get these issues out of the way, I know that:

1. It’s not a “proper” AMG
2. It’s an old design from the ML and due for replacement
3. A sporty SUV is an oxymoron, but...

I’m looking for a family-sized SUV that is well made, well equipped, comfortable and is not TOO dull to drive (or (non-hybrid) Diesel engined).

The GLE is about the right size. We have three large and growing teenage boys so good-sized, middle row seats are a must plus we are moving to a rural, hilly area. I’ve always liked the GLS but it is just too big and the GLA/B, too small. We are also considering the Volvo XC90, Lexus RXL, another Disco Sport.

I also like the GLE 500e but fear that the reduced boot space steals too much practicality from the load space as we also have a dog and need as much room as poss.

So has anyone got / had / tried the GLE 43 and if so, what are your thoughts and what sort of fuel economy did you experience? We’re not expecting to do a massive mileage but has to be a consideration these days, eh?

Any info / alternative suggestions gratefully accepted thumbup

Smooth, fast and capable. All GLE43s got adjustable air suspension and don’t lean much through the corners even when set to soft. The engine is super sweet with plenty of torque so it doesn’t need to be worked too hard to get going. It works really well with the 9-speed box.

Late 2017 and 2018 models started to come through with higher specs - the Night Edition Premium Plus is well worth considering if you’d like the 360° camera. From memory most 2018 models I’ve seen have the towing package fitted.

Fuel economy? I can’t say I was being gentle last time I drove one but on a longer drive expect high 20s. The fuel tank is huge too so you won’t be spending every other night at the petrol station.

The SUV models don’t hang around for very long either - if you see one you like the look of get in there quick.

Thanks M272 , that’s helpful. Details of the specs and years when worthwhile improvements were made are always welcome.

I have to admit it’s probably the least sensible / most fun option of the ones I’m considering but I am tempted. Think it will have to go on the “test drive” list driving
