I've spent time looking but haven't found the answer.
I have a 2007 merc with I think are normal headlamps (not xenon) but have an active element to them.
The main beam is on some sort of rocker (Up and down)
I had a slight bump on the drivers side which had an impact on the one headlight. I was easily able to remove headlight and re-seat it correctly.
Unfortunately now the beam points downwards a tad. I have been scratching my head a bit since all things look correct and my only solution is to fudge it by wedging something against the rocker so that it points at the same height as the other head light.
Does anyone have any clues. I don't think anything is broken inside the headlight since the unit is intact but I could be wrong.

It might help if you can advise which model you have and what system it has for headlight adjustment.

What do you mean by 'active', do you mean the intelligent light system (was it available in 2007?).

If it's the halogen set up, have you removed/changed the bulb - incorrect refitting (if that's possible on a particular model) can affect the beam pattern.

Hi - thanks for the reply
The car is an A200 and its not the ILS system.
The bulb fittings are all ok.
As well as the wiring the unit has a circular connection which might be some sort of vacuum connection but I am not sure.

I can't recall now but the vacuum unit might be the headlight level one, the control being the switch on the dash, positions 0-3 or 0-4 on a thumbwheel. I think 0 is for unladen, the others lower the light beam according to the selected setting.

Is that the 'rocker' you're referring to? Alternatively, do those headlights have a screw type height adjuster on them for normal adjustment?

Thanks for the reply

Yes the thumb wheel next to the light switch I am aware of. That seems to work correctly.
I apologise if I confused you with regards to the rocker.
its not an electrical rocker but a mechanical rocker.
Within the headlight unit (sealed) the main headlight bulb sits on a mechanical rocker. So I can take the dust cap off the back and move up and down the tube which holds the headlight bulb. To me this suggests some sort of automatic adjustment alongside the thumb wheel adjustment.
Currently the good unit has its headlight pointing in front and if I go to full beam that works correctly. The bad unit points to the floor and the main beam also points to the floor and when I use the thumb wheel I can see the beam creeping along the floor.
As said before my only solution is to permanently wedge something in the back so that it is correctly point in front but thus disabling this automatic function.
The bad unit is not broken / rattling since I have had it out so cannot figure out what is wrong.
I initially eliminated the vacuum tube since I thought it only played its part in conjunction with the thumb wheel and that seemed to work.
That just leaves me with the actual seating of the bad unit and the electrical wire loom that plugs into it.

I think I would carefully examine/dismantle the good side. Something is missing, broken or assembled incorrectly.

I'm fairly sure that the W169 A-class had headlight adjuster knobs / screws on the actual headlight unit. Some MBs have three, two for dip and one main. The outer of the two dip ones is for horizontal adjustment, the other for vertical. The main beam one is vertical only.

As I say, can't recall if the A has this but I think it has. If this doesn't work, it's as Positronic says.
