W164 boost issues

Hi All
Have a 2006 ML320 - V6 diesel that's developed a boost issue. I can reach 70mph but it takes a year to get there !
From a Star reading It's thrown up an EML stating that both MAF sensors are faulty which I find strange. The odds on 2 MAF sensors going wrong at the same time ?? I disconnected both the MAFs and it again drove with no boost. I assumed if they were disconnected that the car would drive in a default mode giving normal turbo pressure ?
The turbo does show signs of soot around it (going to investigate that tomorrow weather permitting)
Maybe coincidence but I had this problem 2 weeks ago. Filled up with fuel and instantly full boost was restored. A week later and no boost. (tried filling up again but this time didn't cure the fault)
