W168 Mercedes A Class Diesel in safe mode

Today has been a very messy day as the check engine light needs to go out for the MOT on our ancient Mercedes A class diesel so I decided to get dirty and cleaned out the intake manifold and EGR etc.
I cleaned up a sensor that’s just before the EGR and the car runs great for 10 minutes but once the sensor gets covered in fresh oil it goes back into safe mode.
I am finding after about a half hour drive the intake pipes have a fresh coating of oil and just wondered if the car needs to go to the big scrapyard in the sky or could it be a cheap fix as the other half loves her cheap road tax A class diesel and doesn’t mind driving it even in safe mode.
When I leave the sensor disconnected I also get an overboost code and again it goes into safe mode but this is the most common code I get.
