Late R129 - Door Speaker replacement recommendation?
Discussion
I think that later cars had the BOSE system, if so, you might want to research the options for pure speaker replacement, as the system is a very low ohm value, and most 3rd party speakers are much higher. That, or you’re committing to pulling a lot of other stuff out of the car too when replacing - iirc, the amp is in the passenger footwell.
Mine’s an early model, but I put focal 165 AS3 in, which are 165mm, 80mm & tweeters in the dash. Crossovers live behind the glovebox, powered by an amplifier in the boot (don’t mount into the back of the rear seats/bulkhead with the boot, the fuel tank is there).

I suspect those will fit the later model as well.
It took a while to connect everything up (take out glovebox & lower carpet panels, take out the door trim panels, take out kick plates & rear seats to be able to get the wiring in) etc.. It sounds almost as good as the L7 system in the M6/760 I have, and is more than loud enough to be clear at 90mph with the roof down.
This was the kit I used:
All in cost was around £700, and around 10hours to fit - a lot of that was spent on making good all the previous stereo ‘installs’ people had put in over the years.
I ended up taking the centre console out too in order to make all of that ‘good’.
