R171 front fogs wired as DRLs, I think?

I have had a 2009 SLK for 3 weeks now, enjoying it so far but the front fogs are on all the time. With the lights switch at O or AUTO, they are constantly on with the ignition. The only way to get them to go out is turn the sidelights on!
I have a suspicion that a previous owner has wired them as DRLs, but they go off if the sidelights are turned on and work correctly on and off when pulling out the light switch. There is nothing in the manual about them working this way and they don't seem to have been piggy backed from another supply. If they had, they wouldn't go out when the sidelights are turned on, would they?
I've done plenty of web searching without a result. Is this an option or some re-wiring?
They have also been converted to LEDs with a large resistor in the circuit but I don't think this has any bearing on their operation.

In answer to my own question, I went through the extra menu that I discovered is available because an aftermarket smartop box has been fitted. Audio off, hold down the mute button and there are loads of features selectable.
They front fogs had been set as DRLs in there. So the lights only come on when I turn them on now.
