I live overseas, but keep a property in the U.K., and for a while I’ve had dirty thoughts about a 2016-2017 S class or 7 Series, around the 25k price point, give or take. I don’t have a garage, so until I figure out a form of shelter, I’m hesitant to pull the trigger. C19 has also thrown various spanners into the mix, but that’s largely by-the-by.

However, I’m due to visit the U.K. in Sept for 5 weeks, and renting a car other than a tiny thing is starting to get very pricey, so I’m considering a barge at a price I’ll be willing to leave out for a month to 6 weeks at a time between visits, and keep for probably a couple of years.

How do we feel about W221 S Class machines between 7 and 8k? I’ve a friend who can start it up as and when, and it’ll be sat outside.

What could go wrong? What terrors would I be letting myself in for? I understand the diesels are pretty robust, but there’s a lot of car outside of the engine which you may know more about..

I’ve had an old, leggy (150k+ Miles) V8 7 series which didn’t put a foot wrong, but I’m sure they don’t make them like they used to. To me, the W221 is a much more attractive proposition than the similar-era 7.

Something like this:

Tell me I’m mad. Or to get my cheque book out.

I can see the sense in your idea.
The only possible downside I can see is that these type of cars seem to throw up faulty codes of the batteries show any signs of weakness.
Being left for weeks on end fairly regularly is going to be hard on the batteries so keeping on top of the charge would be important.
Can you leave the car on a battery conditioner (ctek type)?

Hi Scrump,

I apologise, I’ve only just seen this. Thanks for your comments. Others have said too, that preserving the battery will likely save some pain.

I won’t have an issue getting someone to idle the engine or even put a conditioner on the battery, although now my man-maths has started to surface and I’m also considering an early W222 on the basis that a newer car (2015ish) will have fewer issues being left for extended periods, plus the 222 really does it for me, and it appears 2015 models with FMBSH can be had for 17-19k which is doable. I’m guessing that 90k miles on these is scarcely broken in, assuming it’s correctly serviced?
