Could anyone tell me what is supposed to be happening in the boot? This is my recently acquired 2002 SLK32 and it's nothing like the 1998 SLK230 my wife has had for years.

Were all facelifted R170 SLKs equipped like this or was it just the SLK32? If so, replacing the broken and missing bits might be straightforward. If not, I'm in for an expensive time.

I haven't spoken to the dealer who sold me the car. As they let it go in this state with just a pile of bits I wasn't optimistic.

The handle on the cover has gone. There is a compressor but no goo. Once I've collected the bits do they all sit in the cubbyhole behind the cover?

Our pre-facelift SLK230 has a spacesaver spare, jack and special bolts. I was surprised at the difference between the two cars' equipment.

Very pleased with the car. My plan was to buy it as a retirement project to turn it into a bit more of a sports car by making it lighter, starting by making it less luxurious. The electric seats must weigh a ton, for example. But it's seriously quick as it is so now I'm proposing to turn it back to spot on original. Taking out the reversing camera and flip up screen is high on the list. And would I be right in thinking the wheel centres should say Mercedes? The centres are currently AMG and look homemade.

Thanks.

On my SLK 320 the floor on the boot lifts up as single carpeted flap that covers the width of the boot, rather than in a small section. The contents thereunder are the same.

All 320s are facelifted.

Thanks, Ian. The handle on the flap might be tricky then, if it was just for the 32.

I hadn't realised there were no pre facelift 320s.

hi Dickyc
My 32 has what yours has. Empty space where the spare should be and a compressor and an bottle of goo.
I tried the spare from my CLK in the space but it does not fit. That is not to say a SLK space saver will not.
I also have a can of emergency goo from Halfords, just in case.
Regards Peter.

Thanks, Peter. I suspect the space saver spare from the other SLKs wouldn't work as the wheels on the 32 are bigger diameter to accommodate the bigger discs. So instead of tooling up for a different spare they just provided the compressor and goo. Is yours laid out as original? Mine is a mess and I'd like to see how things are arranged.

This time maybe!
If there is any more you would like to know, let me know. Or if you want to come and see my car, (it is as original as it can be) please do, I live in Oxfordshire.
Peter.

Thanks, Peter, that's very generous of you. Although I can see from your pictures what's supposed to be happening in my boot - and believe me it isn't at the moment! - I'll be up to have a look and compare notes before too long. I'm just down the road in Newbury.

Thanks again.

I believe the rear diff on the SLK32 is bigger so no spare wheel. The tools are to the right of the floor box under the carpet flap. Just get some green goo for a puncture repair and enjoy the car.

Still regret selling mine.

If an owner with a facelift 230 or 320 could say whether or not they have a spare would be a great help. The spare from our pre-facelift 230 wouldn't fit because it would clash with the 32's larger calipers. I wonder if all facelift cars did away with the spare to win more luggage space.

You might get a larger palette of responders at (say) mbclub forum or any other Merc specifics suggested here.
