Hi there

I am looking for a low mileage non-turbo E63 or C63. I have had a couple of E39 M5's through the years so I am drawn to the big non turbo cars. My preference is for an E63 as there seems to far less of them around and to me they are more Q car.

Before I go ahead I would appreciate a little advice if possible -

1. E63 v C63?

2. Potential pitfalls of buying used? Areas to focus on?

3. Are there any other good UK forums where I can get advice?

4. I live in Colchester area. Any good local independent workshops or indeed main dealer?

I am really grateful for any answers and guidance.

Ross

I’ve got the 6.2 lump C63 coupe and I love it. Wished I bought the E63 wagon only because it’s bigger and for family duties so found myself running the Dirty fuel E class alongside as a daily.

I bought it 2 years ago from MB in Colchester and they still look after it so I will be interested if there are any good local indies around.

Fuel consumption no good but smile factor outweighs it. You will most likely read about head bolt issues on the M156 engine but this is rare in this country and only applicable to the early engines.

Word of warning, once you test drive it, you will most likely want it because the noise is intoxicating

Thanks. I do like the estates but not to concerned about that. If the right one comes along I will have it. I will be keeping hold of my Octavia VrS estate for the time being. Hardly inspiring but it is solid, reliable and it felt like the thing to do when you turn 40 and have kids..

I prefer the E63. Are you aware of the headbolt issue on some 6.3s (I know, technically 6.2); can't recall the affected engine numbers but search should reveal.

Some will say it's not much of an issue but I know a couple who've had it done, one as a preventative measure. Might already have been done, of course. IIRC, it was up to c2009.

Unless finances rule it out, I wouldn't discount the TT 5.5; on balance I prefer the torque delivery of that engine but they're both good engines. In my experience, some older AMGs, probably more so C63s rather than E63s, have had, shall we say, varying owner profiles, and as a consequence might not have been quite as well maintained as you might wish.

Forum wise, www.mbclub.co.uk would be a good start.

Eta, not sure what years you're looking at, IIRC, there was an internal update (dash etc) c2011

A limited number of pre facelift C 63's had head bolt issues but by now this will have been rectified. Post 2011 cars I believe are fine. The E 63s are longer obviously and heavier but running costs are similar. The legroom in the C63 rear is not the best where as in the E Class there is noticeably more passenger room. The C 63's drive better in my opinion.

Cowdray cars do a reasonable job near Colchester.

I'll second the recommendation for https://forums.mbclub.co.uk/ as a great place for informed chat and advice both pre and post sales.

Currently have a W202 C43 which I consider the Grandmother of the C63 and now wanting to get another AMG in the stable before I get too old to drive.

I'm looking at getting a Coupe C63, what they call the F204 as compared to the W204 saloon and S204 for the estate. They fisrt came out in 2011 with the first facelift of the other 204s.For me the coupe looks like I nice option. Two doors and being a tad egoistic, little rear room apart from some bags, coats and/or small young persons. Kids are now grown and living their lives now,so basically don't need anyhing bigger.

I want a 204 C63 to enjoy the sound track of the last atmospheric V8 AMG engine. The C43 is not too shabby either after one does a secondary cats and resonator delete. Also the new box is better, shifts faster and does give a very slight improvement in overall fuel consumption.

Regarding the head bolts, the 2011 engines are all in the clear. The 2010 being the cut-off date even if it seems some still apear at this late date. The only way to be sure is to check engine serial numbers. Those after engine number 156983 60 060658 should be in the clear.

Some have experienced transmission oil getting overheated making the vehicle go into limp mode. This can be improved by notching up the temperature limit. Has to be done on Star if I'm not mistaken.

I have a c63 and am in colchester ...Found colchester merc to be fairly rigid on their service pricing but Ipswich do a good job and are normally up for a haggle. Ipswich also always provide a courtesy car at no extra charge too. No experience of the e63 but c63 is a hoot and prob the best car ive owned. They have a reputation for being pretty bombproof

Many thanks for your help.

4 months motoring and loving the E63. Its a brute on the country lanes where I live but I can live with that until I get it on some decent roads.

Cowdreys have been excellent so far. Booked in for a B service in January.

Loving the V8 howl
