So, after some fettling on the 55 today, thoughts turn to a X pipe to unleash a bit more sound from the V8

Rather than have something welded in, i'd rather something that's easily reversible with flanged ends so it can be returned to stock quickly and easily.

Any recommendations as to what I should be doing here?

I had my resonator replaced with an X-pipe (E500 so also an M113 engine albeit NA). It does make it a bit boomy in the cabin at cruising speeds, so I wish I'd left the resonator in and instead had cut-out valves installed between resonator and back-boxes to give me the option of more or less noise.

With the X-pipe it does sound lovely to the point that people have remarked on the sound (positively!) but isn't obnoxiously loud.
Mine is welded in but any exhaust fabricator would be able to weld on flanges if you wanted, although it could cost about the same to have the resonator welded back in if you return to standard, and unless you have a proper lift the faff of refitting the resonator yourself would be immense.

I just ordered a stainless steel 15-19 mustang resonator delete pipe. The better ones are built pretty nice and very close to the size needed to do the second cat / resonator delete. Save some $ on the fabrication. Just came in, did not get it welded in yet.

Can anyone recommend a particular supplier such as CKS?

Ideally somewhere Portsmouth / Southampton area?

I had a few of my cars done here (better off calling them as opposed to web contact) and that includes my current CLS55 -

I'd also been in contact with Redhill Classics as well beforehand -

All of the cars I've had done have sounded good and not over the top while making it sound like how a V8 should sound (IMO). Make sure you keep what they cut out as the next owner has the choice to put it back to standard. Mine all had secondary cat/reasonater delete replaced with X pipe.

Also, I'm sure it was MBS (Merc specialist in Southampton) done one on my old CLS500 as an afterwork project.

Speak to PCS in Horndean
https://www.prestigecarservice.co.uk/

they seem to have a good reputation so I'd imagine they would know where and how.
