Tow Away Alarm on SLK R170 - do I need it? It's playing up

Never had a car with a tow away alarm before. Bought the car ten days ago and all was well until I took it out in the wet. The light on the tow away alarm switch came on and now won't go off. I've searched using various phrases about tow away alarms - can I do without it / is it connected to the immobiliser and so on - but I can't find a definitive answer.

I'd be happy to be left with a disconnected switch on the dash and everything else gone. Is that possible?
