Hi folks. I bought 18litre cube of oil and filter MB parts desk few weeks ago to do an oil change when I get a dry day.
Never changed oil before but watching the YouTube videos repeatedly I'm going to give it a go.
Today I ordered a filter wrench off Europarts and also noticed they have good discount on oils etc for St Patrick's week.
I paid about £70 for 18 litres which I thought was reasonable but then spotted this on Europarts.

Will it do? https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/gulf-formula-gx-5w-...

My car is E320cdi 2007 150k it's spec 229.5 which seems to match MB approval.

This should be good for 2 services and some left over for top ups, although it's never used oil which is reassuring. I'll then get a refund on the MB oil.

According to this, and as that oil is 229.5, doesn’t look like it:

Think this is similar link to yours and when I scroll down there's an X beside each grade of Gulf GX which I assume meant it's compliant?

Yes, to 229.5, but the chart I posted indicates the engine requires .51 or .52.

Ok so it's not compatible. The numbers seem to match what's on the oil cube I bought from MB and they matched it from the chassis number.

I've bought oil before but never went into such detail about it. Thanks for your help.

No problem. If I can offer a couple of tips if it’s your first time:

Loosen the oil filter before you drain / suck out the oil, as this will allow oil held in the filter to drain down into the pan.
Moisten the new O ring on the filter cap with clean oil as it helps it seat correctly.

Thanks Stegal. Yeah some videos show that and others don't. The ones that don't I disregard.
Couldn't get a filter wrench 84mmx14 sides anywhere but Europarts but it's 5+ days delivery if at all.

Rediscovered a hidden away motor parts ship that had the very thing for 8.69 slightly dearer but fits a treat.

I'll cancel oil and wrench from Europarts.
Cheers.

If it doesn't have a DPF, I am pretty sure 229.5 spec oil is fine.

Otherwise use 229.51 but spec 5W-40 not 5W-30. I used this in mine: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mannol-ENERGY-FORMULA-P...

I use this oil for my 2008 E320cdi (non DPF): https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-884-motul-specific-me...

Gets changed every 10k (about every 6 months atm), used to use about 1 litre of oil between changes. However I replaced the PCV for the updated type at the last service and it didn’t use a drop in 10k this time.

Its also available as a 5w30, if yours doesn't have a DPF then low ash won't matter as much.

Wow thanks for all the replies. I just came on to update and noticed them. Ok so yesterday was dry if not Baltic so decided to put the action plan into place. This was my first oil change ever and I don't have ramps, lifts or pits to help with access. So had to jack car up on one side and slide a cross section of tree trunk under the other side.
Health n safety out the window but I shook the car as violently as I could and it held.
Got the undertrays off except the latter one, so was able to hold it out of the way to access the drain bolt. Took a while to release it then gush, I held the trim out of the way but it splash over the brick driveway and run down in a slick. My language was unrepeatable hahahaha. Dammed it with a towel and although it's only about 100ml it spreads!

Loosened the filter housing and removed filler cap to allow as much oil as possible to drain. I noticed that there remained an inch of oil in the filter housing doughnut, thought it would totally drain. Cleaned it out and could see and inlet/outlet at 9 o'clock. Is that normal or is it blocked? If an issue what should I do?

New copper washer on and tightened up bolt. Cleaned up the oil sitting on top of the trimmings. Such a mess.
Cleaned the dirt and stone collection out of the other cover and refitted it. It wasn't sitting right but I have it right now. When I'd go over speed bump etc there was like a flappy noise. Think that was the cause and my reseating the trim I think has cured it. Glad it's not suspension parts. Time will tell.

So before I started I checked the £33 oil was compatible and it was clearly marked 229.51 Mercedes approved so proceeded. I was going to decant the 8.5 litres of oil into smaller containers to help with refilling but the big container had the capacity markings on it.
Cut a 2litre 7up bottle in half to make a funnel as all my funnels were wrong shape. This really helped to get oil in cleanly. Life hack!

Cleaned and buttoned everything up and took her a blast with some top up oil if needed. The level on the dipstick seems ok but I'll check this morning after it's sat overnight.

So I felt a sense of achievement afterwards but it was a faff not having the correct facilities.
I also have the pleasure of power washing the brick driveway today. Black oil will be hard to shift.
My light grey jogging bottoms and fleece were washed but still marked. Think I'll buy an oil extracting tool for next time.

Positives were I saved time, money hassle compared to leaving into a mechanic.
The underside of the car is cleaner than I thought. No rust or worn parts although I'm not expert in suspension.
The black oil pan was a little dirty but no visible drips.
There was a few drips at the passenger end of the black bar. Anti roll bar? Cleaned those up too.
Put in a bottle of Cataclean to help keep injectors working.

Had a look around the injectors as best I could and seem clean so no black death but I do still think I smell fumes in the cabin when driving. I've changed the cabin filter was very dirty. I've lubricated the sunroof so it's perfect now.

Anyway thanks for your help and I know some of you post up your exploits which are inspirational. I'm away to get the Karcher out! Hopefully get time to take SL55 a run as it's sunny today.

Cheers.

Just checked and the St Patrick's week sale has ended but now have 60% sale which makes my oil £30.79 which is £1.50 a litre!
That's about £3 less than I paid but I'm happy enough. Happy weekend!

Glad you got your first change done - the second will be easier I’m sure! Keep an eye on the oil around the passenger side of the anti-roll bar - when the oil cooler seals let go, the oil in the vee drains via a drain hole on the near side rear of the engine, appearing at low level in the same corner of the engine.

It’s normal for some oil to lurk in the irregularities at the base of the oil filter housing - if you do get an extractor, use the hose to suck out as much as you can (it doesn’t really matter, but I like to get as much old oil out as possible!).

My 06 CLS diesel uses the earliest version of the OM642 and that has a sticker on it from the factory insisting on 228.51 and 229.31 oils. The former never seems to get a mention, and the latter has seemingly progressed to .51 and .52 as listed on the Bevo sheet. We’ve put 250k miles on OM642 engines, and they have all used 5w30 Mobil 1 oil, and apart from the 211 oil cooler leak, hardly using a drop between services.

Yeah I think mine has that sticker with the oil grades which threw me off a bit. Oh I was fearing you'd say that about oil cooler seals. I've hear horror stories about getting it sorted. I really could be doing without that anytime soon.
Was literally a couple of drops and the bar was a bit greasy so I cleaned it up.
The car does seem to use oil so I was hopeful I was safe. Especially as it's about 20k miles since last service.

Any ideas about the oil filter housing still holding some oil after the filter was removed? Is that normal?

Oh yes I think I'll buy an extractor for future use. I've seen good reviews for the cheap ones that connect to your battery.

Got the driveway scrubbed and rinsed and think it's mostly away. The buff gravel I lifted and replaced with clean gravel from elsewhere.

Treating myself to a drive in the SL. Like to get it out of garage every so often in the off season to keep it sweet.

IIRC our 211 showed a slight leak at least two years before it became an absolute torrent that couldn’t be ignored. At that stage the car was effectively crippled, but £150 of gaskets and three lazily paced days sorted it - I could probably halve that time now I know what goes where etc..

The oil filter housing is very “uneven”:at the base, so some retention is inevitable. I have no experience of the battery operated pumps, but get on well with a Pela hand operated pump.

Yes oil in the "donut bowl" is normal, I normally suck it out with my pump and refill with clean oil.

Thanks guys. Glad I've done the first one and more empowered to do it again. Seems to be running sweetly and more leaks that I know of.
Good to know there's knowledge here to help others out. That's the positive side of social media!
