2008-2011 SL63 AMG 6.3
Discussion
I was wondering if anyone on the forum had owned the above & could comment on the general ownership experience - reliability/repairs at independents etc.
For clarity i'm talking about the one with the naturally aspirated 6.3 V8, not the later twin turbo one.
I saw a red one years ago in Amersham with those 5 x 'triple spoke' alloys & it stuck in my mind as looking superb.

I ran one for about a year and really liked it. Early ones had a potential headbolt issue although mine was an early one it had no signs of having a problem. A good independent is as good as the main dealer in my opinion.
Lovely engine that loved to be revved out, main thing was it's ability to be a comfortable long distance cruiser with the roof up, then great fun with the roof down blasting along twisty A roads.
Mine had the performance pack which gave it a bit more BHP, also the air scarves which was something I thought would be a waste of money were superb on a cooler summer evening with the roof down.
I did try the turbo version at MB World for a four hour thrashing and really liked that too, driving my N/A car back from MB World I really couldn't decide which I prefered.
If I were to buy another I'd buy the turbo car with cooled seats and air scarves though because they did some improvements on them.

Had an early 6.3 at the same time as running a 55 also.
As previous post suggests, early cars had headbolt issues although mine was ok.
Exhaust note on the 63 was nicer than the 55 but the supercharger / 113K engine sound is something to cherish
Gearbox in 63 is better than the 55. Rear end styling on the 63 is nicer than the 55 IMO but subjective. Front end of the 63 is ugly and the 55 much the prettier car but, again subjective
I ran out of garage space so had to decide which to keep and I chose the 55 really based on the front end looks but more that the M113K engine is fabulous.
A very capable car none the less and serious value for money. My pick would be a 2007 final edition 55 though. The later turbo charged car is no doubt brilliant but I can't get on with it's looks

I have owned a 2011 Sl63 for nearly 7 years without any problems other than a gearbox sensor that stopped the car from starting a few years back (repaired under warranty), never driven any of the older 55 models so cant compare, but the 63 puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.
It will soon be up for sale as looking for something different.
