Hi all,

I live in France and am pondering an AMG Estate, but don’t wish to get stung by having anything newer than 8 years old.

What’s the best big barge to have for sh*ts & giggles and trips to vide greniers (car boots)?

Not worried about mpg, just reliability (if that’s not too much to ask).

Cheers,

Phh.

I drive a 2003 E55 Estate, owned it for 4 years and apart from an air pump and airmatic strut it's been very reliable. Including servicing and the above it's probably cost around £1000 per year to run.

I keep looking at newer models and even RS6's but there's something about the E55, I always end up thinking I'd need to spend 3-4 times the value of mine to get something probably not as good.

Good to know, thanks. I’ve always likes the E55. Is there any point in freeing the exhaust up a tad? I usually change the intake and exhaust on most cars and combine that with a new map...

Usual mod is X pipe, can also be combined with fitting c63 back boxes, I’ve done neither as like it standard.

Lots of info in AMG lounge on MBclub.co.uk.

I was led to understand that in France, any such mods are "interdit"... Has that position relaxed or do you have a friendly tester? biggrin

Another advantage of the W211 E55 in France is the airmatic suspension. I've found cars with sporty coil spring suspension are a PITA once you get off the autoroutes, but with the airmatic you get a comfort preset that some say is nearly as compliant as Citroen oleomatic. Plus, as you are going to car boot sales you can hit the suspension raise button if it's a bumpy field.

I think you're me!
Exactly the same thought process going on here although it would be 5.5 e63 or cls 63 not rs6.
It's just such a good car.

Well, having lived here for approaching three years I can only go on what I’ve seen on the roads. I’ve not seen any ‘Max Power’ stuff, but quite a few obviously modified cars. I suspect you hit the nail on the head with finding a ‘friendly tester’! :-D

The E63 w211 is quite an incredible machine. as it is the facelift, it is a bit of a step up from the mighty E55 in terms of interior and brakes. the engine isnt possibly as robust in terms of reliability but there are more examples with lower mileage than the E55s. I prefer the natural aspirated 6.2 engine over the super charged but there are many that prefer the supercharged. lastly the design elements of the e63 make it better looking . overall I dont think I would mind either but recently bought an e63.
