Missus has a 69 plate E class convertible - been reading about Merc and other manufacturers introducing keyless entry fobs recently that stop transmitting a signal after a few minutes of not being moved. Anyone know how do you tell if you've got a old or new fob?

Haven’t heard of that with the new fob. However I know that with the old fobs (at least for a 2015 version) if you double press quickly the lock button you can put it to sleep and disable keyless entry. It can only be woken up again by manually unlocking with the key fob.

Yup, this is what I do. Just to add, you can check that you've activated it properly because the red LED on the fob will flash quickly with each of the two presses, and then give a slightly longer flash to confirm.

Alternatively, try opening the door after locking it. If the key is active the car will unlock automatically. If it isn't, you'll be able to tug the handle.

Yours will be the new key fob on a 69 plate, and it's right in that it does have a motion sensor in it.

You can still turn it off manually yourself though for peace of mind. As with the previous gen keys, double press the lock button, and the red light at the top of the fob will flash twice briefly and light up once. Also as opposed to your indicator lights flashing 3 times when you've locked it normally, when you've double tapped it they'll flash four times. If you have keyless entry, the first time she goes to get in it after having turned it off manually she will need to unlock it with the fob to re-activate the keyless entry.
