Afternoon All

Complete noob here but with serious car buying related questions so hoping you can help!

Currently driving a leased Citroen C4 Grand Picasso which is due back in the next few months. Looking for something less "boring" but with similar load carrying capacity and someone mentioned the E class estates to me.

There looks to be a fair selection of used, relatively high mileage estates knocking around which all look in very good nick. Not too worried about the high mileage as I know that Mercs generally can get to the moon and back however would appreciate some guidance around what to look for and if there is anything I should run away from very quickly if I see it. Not looking to spend a fortune so something around the £7k mark - plenty of them on Autotrader for instance...

Thanks in advance!

Have a 2013 e class. Comfortable, reliable, economical (220d) but a good friend warned me about parking bays and small dings. Park well away from anyone and it’s like a magnet. It still gets clobbered. I imagine the estate even worse.

I have a 2014 E 350 estate. Bought as a bit of a stop gap but 3 years later I still have it. A great car, if a little thirsty in urban driving.

(Not sure about the parking ding comment, I don’t think there is anything unique to E class estates which attract them.)

For £7k you can get a lovely W124 estate that will carry at least as much as, if not more than, a more modern E Class without any of the unnecessary size and electrical complication. And it will be worth the same as or very possibly more than what you paid for it when you sell it. If you ever do.

Currently driving a 2014 E220d SE estate. Bought as a bit of a stop gap after i had to reject my C63.

Cant really fault it apart from the crap MPG around town when its cold. Plus the stop/start thing seems to have a mind of its own.

Its comfy, quiet, refined, tonnes of space and a little bit of oomph if you need to overtake someone. Approaching nearly 60k miles and the interior is still rattle and creak free.

Had an E350 in 2012 (new at the time). Lovely car but I certainly didn’t fancy running it out of warranty, there was loads of kit on it (generous car allowance) and an awful lot that could go wrong. Being more used to JLR products at the time you might understand my worry!

Great car, but as others have said, not thirsty in urban environments. My commute to the office is 5 miles but generally took 35 minutes. 17 mpg was the norm.

On a 200 mile motorway run at 70-80 mph I would generally see 50 mpg on the trip computer, which was brilliant.
