The search engines (including Halfords) recommend a 110AGM battery for my 2012 E350CDI coupe. The length of this battery is 315mm and is 80Ah.

We bought the car about 2.5 years old. The former owner appears to have replaced the original battery with a cheap battery from Europecar parts. It's only a 70Ah and is 280mm in length. I can see they have moved the secure plate which bolts the battery to the car to cater for the smaller battery size.

Any ideas on how I can confirm the actual size of the right battery for the car.

Halfords offer a 5 year warranty on their batteries. Is it just worth getting their ones in and to get them install it. It transfers the risk to them if they cock up on the battery type.

Are you replacing because you think the wrong one is fitted or because you're having electrical issues such as poor starting?
If the former then I'd say don't bother, wait until the battery dies then cross the bridge (to mix metaphors).

Does the owners manual give a hint as to the right size?
Did you get the size by entering model details or registration, reg is likely more reliable?
Might a Merc specific forum such as listed here be a good place to ask. They might also have experience of any wrinkles to be observed during a battery change e.g. any ecus which need some resetting process afterwards.
Lastly dare I suggest the expense of a garage (even Hafords!) to get one and fitting!! The horror smile

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the battery keeps dying. It does not seem to retain its charge. It must be at least 4 years old so I will have to stomach the cost for its replacement.

I thought of Halford but after googling reviews for their batteries I was put off. I took it to Kwik fits and they recommended a battery which was way too big (one for the boot in the E class saloons I think). They said they can only go on what their system says so they could not help me and recommended Mercedes.

I ended up ordering a wrench kit and playing around with it myself. I got a ruler out and measured the space in the bay. I think it will fit the battery being recommended by the majority of search engines i.e. the 315mm long one. I've ordered one from eBay at a fraction of the costs of a shop and will give it a go myself.

A local shop quoted me £250 for a Bosch battery. Ebay has it for £170 delivered and the wrench kit from Amazon is £6. With a bit of luck it might work out.

Contact tayna.co.uk. Their info is usually spot on. I always buy batteries from there.

When we had a battery changed some witchcraft had to be done via STAR to make the car aware the battery was new.

It wasn’t as simple as just putting one in.
