Just been told by my mechanic that my 2006 CLS 320cdi is losing steering fluid and that the rack needs replacing as it is not easily repaired out here.

The options he gave me were to either buy a brand new one, buy a reconditioned one or find a used one from a breakers yard.

Out here, all three are not cheap options but looking on ebay a recon one is half the price I was quoted for a locally sourced used one.

Other than on ebay, does anyone know of a reliable supplier of reconditioned racks in the UK who I can call directly?

Did you manage to get this sorted on your car in the end?

My rack has always had a knock in the actual rack and pinion gear where there is a few mm of free play, however it has never come on up an MOT and I took it to a Mercedes specialist who advised he thinks it's 'normal' (my most hated saying when people are talking about vehicle defects!). I was hoping to get mine refurbished or exchanged for a refurbished unit. New racks are stupid money and I fear a used rack may develop the same problem or even tally leak (bering in mind these cars are all over ten years old now).

I ended up buying an exchange refurbished rack from FBS Automotive Ltd, website: www.fbsautomotive.co.uk.

It fitted fine with no complications and was not too expensive.
