W124 coupe footwell water leak - right, that’s it
Discussion
My ‘96 320 coupe has performed faultlessly as my DD, even 4 up bad dog to the MiL over in the SE.
However it has a occasional water leak into the top left hand corner of the passenger footwell, leaving the carpet wet. Cleared out the drains etc but it would not go away, spoiling the leathery old Mercedes smell.
With all the rain recently I spent a happy few hours head in the footwell with a torch and eureka, water sighted. It was coming from the loom through the bulkhead, where the plastic surround finishes and is is just the wires.
Hopefully the photo will paint a thousand words.
Not completely obvious but the cable is visible between the plastic shroud with the 4 slots and the bathtub shaped cover of the bulkhead.

Then looking from the engine compartment side, it is the cable bunch that has the smaller cable in the 9 o’clock position and the 2 rubber tags above it. It also has the wires for the windscreen wash heaters joining it from the bonnet.
This washer cable appears to be the culprit. It is only a gauze-like covering, which allows water to run down inside it with any run-off from the plastic cover behind the battery.
Thus the plan is to use some flexible plastic tubing to surround and seal these cables to prevent the water running into the main loom and through the bulkhead and out into the footwell

So finally tube in place then taped around and I’ll add some sealer as belt and braces.
I’m also going to try to alter the run-off path of the water from the plastic cover behind the batter to stop and water running down or over any of these cables.
Then we will see what happens. Hope this helps someone. Next bit of maintenance is just around the corner, I don’t doubt. Still looking for an original late front offside mudflat though.
