Hi guys.

Starting to give a 5.5BiTurbo some serious thought in the E/CLS guise.

Can anyone enlighten me regards reliability?

Late 2012 car I know there is Mercedes TIPS document about timing change mod and check valves.

No idea if there is check valves installed or if it suffers from cold top end rattle as I’m yet to view and example.

I’ve read the horrors of the web regarding the possibility of misfiring and bent rods causing issues.

Along with CPS sensors leaking oil to the wiring loom to then reach the ECU.

So will be getting a through independent inspection, but all that aside who’s had issues?

I know of one member on MBClub who ended up with a rebuilt at a cost of 11K.

No thanks... so wondering what the wider verdict is on this?

It’s certainly not built like the M113K. I’m a little regretful about selling that on but at over 12 years old it was more than a bit tired and the gearbox really did let it down, but it was utterly reliable and bomb proof.

Wondering if I should now stick to my M156 C63...

I think you'll find that its remapped, high torque 157's that are driven hard which have problems with bent conrods. Stock engines are OK.
This video gives you all the info on timing chain issues:

This guy is very knowledgeable and has a series of videos about these engines. Well worth a look.

Although my SL63 is outside the engine ranges for chain/tensioner/check valve replacement, it still occasionally rattles on startup if its been left for a couple of hours after a good run. No faults are logged and because its intermittent its difficult to demonstrate to a dealer. Doesn't seem to have any effect on driving though.

Most engines have issues (think Boxster) but you have to consider what percentage fail and not get things out of proportion.

Are you buying from a MB dealer? If so you'll get 2 years warranty.

Cheers, that makes sense, I guess this guy on MBClub just had terrible luck - https://forums.mbclub.co.uk/threads/its-not-a-good...

Private purchase but will arrange for a proper independent inspection at PCS prior to purchase. I'll also arrange for a third party warranty.

Now the question is to keep the C63 M156 or to get into the W218 and enjoy the pile of additional toys it has to offer along with the unnecessary (unless I drive it and feel differently) additional power it has to offer.

I also need to really consider if I prefer M156 6.2 NA or 5.5TT, from all standpoints, economy, running costs, reliability and so on.

Cheers
