My Used warranty has come up for the c220d, Merc are quoting £400 for 12 and £800 for 24 months. Now that seems great value for a manufacture backed warranty, is it worth while though? Do they pay out without too much of a issue?

Had a mercedes extended warranty on my C63

Car developed an abs sensor fault. They sent a mobile mechanic down to repair it who couldn't, so they sent a recover truck with a courtesy car to take it back to the garage for repair. It was fixed and ready for collection the following afternoon.

£400 seems a bargain.

I wouldn't expect any issues, but, if you haven't had extended warranties before, then be aware they tend to be insurance backed products and, generally, something needs to clearly break or stop working for it to be covered. You'll be unlikely to have much luck with "it's making a funny noise" or intermittant problems. Watch out for wear and tear exclusions, and they often exclude things like wiring faults.

I used WarrantyDirect for a few years on my Merc and it worked fine with the dealer - replacing suspension components etc that had worn out. However they've changed hands now and there's so much bad press I don't think I'd go with them again.

I did take the VW extended warranty on wife's diesel Tiguan - I'd say that's a similar level of car to C Class and it's got DSG and 4Motion, and tons of EU6 emissions stuff, inc AdBlue. That was £350 with everything cover and no excess, 15K miles per year.

So the MB one isn't exactly a bargain, but you're buying peace-of-mind as you hope nothing will go wrong. I wouldn't run a modern diesel without the safety-net of some sort of warranty.

My experience with the MB warranty is very positive. Even a few issues I had which were not actual breakages were investigated and sorted by the dealer under the warranty.

I recall that there are (or at least used to be) two levels of MB warranty. One covered major mechanical breakage only, the other was a much more comprehensive cover.

I have no personal experience, but it is perhaps worth pointing out that the MB extended warranty offering has recently (March?) changed substantially. As has been mentioned above, MB used to offer three levels of cover. The highest level was very comprehensive and, unusually, covered wear and tear, although I think it got quite a bit more expensive after 60k miles. It seems to have been well regarded. The latest version is more typical of the industry standard. It excludes wear and tear and even lamp units (except xenons) - so no cover for expensive LED headlights, as I read it. So past experience may not be a good guide. That said, the cost does seems reasonable and your MB dealer will handle the claim. Worth checking whether it is tied to MB main dealer servicing, if that is important. At the end of the day it is an insurance product, so you will probably on average pay a bit more than self insuring, but will avoid the risk of a very large bill. Depends on how risk averse you are.

I have it - the 2 year £800 job on my C Class, which is now 3.5 years old, so 6 months out of original warranty.

In short, yes it 'works', no there's been no hassle whatsoever with claims (the garage dealt with it all for me when I told them I had it in place) and to answer the point above, even a 'noise' behind the dash was sorted simply.

Would I do it again? No question. The only downside is about the headlight exclusion, but £33 a month for peace of mind on everything else is money well spent IMO.

YMMV.

Just out of interest how many claims have you had in that six months?

Two. About to go in for the second claim.

Both claims, if not warranteed, would cost more than the cost of the warranty.

That seems a lot, my C63s estate is about £160 a month, didn’t pay for 12 months as I don’t intend to keep it for another year.

Is it based on age and/or mileage?
Is it cheaper to go on a rolling extension?

Just thought I'd add my experiences into this thread as my car is now 3 and I've obtained a quote today from Merc.

They only offer the Tier 1, no excess, and on a CLS 220d that's only done 27k miles they'd like £1125 or £107 per month for 1 years cover. I'll be putting some money in a slush fund instead!

I was quite surprised based on the OP being quoted £400 for a C220d, as my CLS is also just the 220d, and as the warranty only covers mechanical and electrical faults I cant see how why the cost is 3 x that of a C Class which I assume probably has a fair bit of similar/shared parts.
