Upgrade to a new G350cdi?
I love old (2008) G wagon but am looking to upgrade ... given delivery delay and price...am tempted to buy a 2017 G500 (new engine 4.0 v8) or G63 rather than a new G350cdi.
Car is not needed for daily use - keep it mostly in country/ mountains and leisure use. Who would agree (or not)? Any chance last of old G wagons might keep their value better than the brand new (and admittedly technically much improved) G class?

As someone who bought the old shape G wagen in their final year despite knowing the new one is coming (although not what it looked like at that stage) I think that there is a slim chance they will hold their value a bit better. If the new G had been poorly styled or lacking some of the ability I think it would have helped the old ones. But it seems to be widely accepted that they did a pretty good job so I'd say a lot of people will be on the look out for the new shape as a priority.

That said the old one does have some advantages, it is smaller and especially narrower which helps with parking and on narrow roads. Also it retains a lot more of the old school character unlike the new one.

I'm happy we got one of the last W463s and will probably hold onto it for some time, and it retaining value well would be a nice bonus. But sadly I wouldn't bank on it.

The new one won't accept portal axles but I suspect less than 1% of owners would consider them. But that's precisely why I hope the old one drops in value - I can't think of anything more fun than a G55 on portals.
