I have a 2006 SLK 280 that has the standard radio unit, does anyone have any info on best aftermarket unit to replace this that has Apple CarPlay? Is it a plug and play job or would it require additional wiring, would like to keep the functionality of the steering wheel buttons too if possible?

As it happens I've got one, although the adapter wiring may be different from what was fitted to mine, as I had a 2009 post facelift model. It's a Kenwood Garmin DNX5160DABS.

Any aftermarket unit will require a loom including an controller box to interface between the head unit and car wiring to convert the power/speaker connectors and maintain the steering wheel controls.

Thanks for the info, looks like a great unit but don't need the built in Nav as would use Waze etc. the unit that has been recommended is a Kenwood DMX-7017DABS. Halfords will fit with all accessories for £425 doesn't seem too outrageous?

The things to watch are are competent at removing the trim, as on the later cars the centre console/ handbrake surround, ashtray, heater controls need removing before the radio comes out. Also they retain the power to the aerial booster.
