Thinking of a European road trip sometime next year so I'm already thinking of a nice car to go in and also to use as a second car for general summer cruising around in.
We want something that's comfy, must be automatic and easy to live with.
Seems I can get a 2006ish CLK350 with 100,000 miles or less for about £3500 or so.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the rear seats fold down in these CLK's.
Can anyone confirm this? That'd be fantastic for getting my bike in the boot if they do.
Anything to watch out for on these cars?
Seems like a lot of car for the money.

Doesn't the roof have a specific area to store itself when down so you probably can't put the seats down?

That's what I was thinking, I couldn't work out how the rear seats could fold with all the roof gubbins being there.

I must have been mistaken when I read that they could.

Anyone know if the boot is big enough on these CLK convertibles to fit two Bromptons in there?

I can confirm the seats do not fold on the cabriolet. I know as I have a 2008 CLK350 Sport.

The reason the 2005-6 cars are cheap is due to an issue affecting *some* cars fitted with the V6 petrol engine between these dates. Google ‘Balance shaft issue’ and you will find links where you can check the engine number on your car. It will tell you if the car you want to buy is in the affected range.

That aside, they are great cars. Not sure if two bromptons would fit in the boot. Certainly wouldn’t with the boot separator down (needed in order to drop the roof).

HTH. I have done two Euro trips in mine and it was brilliant through the alps.

They are excellent value!

Perhaps a slightly earlier 320 CLK (similar shape) might be a 'safer' option in respect of the engine risk.
Do both Bromptons need to go in the boot? Do you need four seats - could you put one or both bikes in the back seat area, with other luggage in the boot?

I have been looking at these and very tempted - four (ish) seats, convertible, modern enough, reasonably reliacle, good spares availability and plenty on Indis to look after them.

The 350 engine is fine as long as you check the engine number is outside the affected zone and range. I bought a 2008 which was well outside the range and it’s been 100% reliable. But being a 2008 I pay £550 tax a year!

A pre 2005 320 is bullet proof. But it’s the pre facelift model which is most noticeable inside. Post 2005 interior much nicer.

Horses for courses really. I wouldn’t rule out a 2005 / 6 350 as long as the engine number is outside the danger zone range. Check carefully as a lot fell into that range of engine numbers. A 2007 or 8 car will nearly always be fine. But do still check!

To answer your other question. The boots on these are big for a convertible. Huge compared to a 3 series. You can get a lot in but it is a funny shape. Don’t forget the backseats can be used for luggage too. I used them for hold all’s etc when I did my road trips as we were camping (and yes, we did get a tent and kit in the car just fine)!
