Hi Chaps
An elderly lady I know through work has a 2001 A140 auto. It has been a good car for her tbh.

Anyway, in the past she has been ripped of by a local garage and I therefore said to her to contact me first if she has any trouble.

She called me today and explained how a few days ago the EML came on so she called at the garage and they ran a diagnostics test and just said 'its emissions' and it could be very expensive to fix!

I immediately thought o2 sensor but after some research I see these have a secondary air pump.

She just drove to my work and I opened the bonnet and can see the pump. Should the pump run all of the time??

The pump was not running and I unplugged it and this had no effect on the engine; I plugged it back in.

I am not familiar with air pumps but believe they help control emissions?

I had a look at the fuse diagram and the pump has a relay next to the battery but I am unsure which relay it is, anyone know?

Any advice is massively appreciated as she is very worried about this and is even thinking about buying another car!!

Cheers

Anyone???

Bit of an update, from doing a bit of research online, it appears the air pump only operates when the car is first started from cold?

I asked her to bring the car to me earlier as I brought a spare car battery and some test leads with me. I unplugged the pump and took 12v directly to it and the pump works. This does not rule out the relay which I am led to believe is under the bonnet somewhere.

I would guess the MAF and the O2 sensor are the other things that could affect the emissions enough to bring up the EML light?

Cheers

The SAI only runs when the car is cold (as far as I am aware) so that would not be my first place to look.
Before you do anything else you should get the error codes read. The EML will be triggered by a specific fault and the code for that will be stored in the cars ECU. A basic OBD reader may give you what you need, and I would try that first. You may get more info from the Mercedes specific STAR reader but you will have to pay someone to give you that readout (use a Mercedes indie, not a main dealer).

Thank you.

I have VW and Porsche OBD readers but not Merc.

Let me have a think
