Hi,

First of all, apologies for posting a Jeep related query in the Mercedes forum, but I thought it would get more views here than in the 'Yank Motors' one and seeing as it's a Mercedes engine, the users here would probably more clued up.

Anyway, I viewed an 06 plate Jeep Commander today (these have the 3.0. Merc CRD- apparently the same one used in the Sprinter) and after taking the engine cover off noticed a fairly substantial amount of oil in two areas, one being behind the turbo and the other being around the serpentine (?) belt.

I've read that these Merc 3.0 CRD engines are prone to leaks from the oil cooler (conveniently placed in the V). It was also visible underneath the engine as it had dripped onto a tray towards the rear of the engine bay, near the lower control arm mounts. I didn't take the car but said to the owner i'd have to look into the cause of the leak and get back to him with an offer if I thought it was worth getting fixed.

Anyone able to help with diagnosing this? The oil looked like it had been there a while and after googling, saw varied results ranging from 'engine out job' to 'replace a certain seal on the turbo inlet' and all manner of other reasons for this leak. I'm not necessarily put off of the purchase if i can get an idea of what this is likely to cost, the owner said he's open to offers accordingly.

I can't attached the bl0ody pics as they all need resizing in order to fit...

Thanks

I had the same engine in a WK Jeep Grande Cherokee. On the whole it was a great unit. My only issue was the glow plug control module, but it was easy to diagnose and relatively cheap to fix.
