Hi guys,

I recently posted about changing my commuter car for a mercedes C220 CDI and got some good feedback however after some further research I'm now tempted by either a C250 or C320.. looking around 2008-2010 and i'll be covering around 25,000 miles a year so need to it be reliable..

I've searched high and low on youtube for review videos of those 3 engines and have come back with very little so was hoping people on here might be able to shed some light

What sort of mpg can I expect from the 3, which engine is the better one to go for and what should I look out for when viewing them?

Can’t comment on reliability, but my wife had a C250d circa 2016 and I hated that engine. Sluggish, loud. Hated it

Company I worked at had a 2010 6 cylinder diesel pool car and that engine was very nice

The 320 is the most refined of the lot but spec is also something to consider real world you're looking at around 42mpg on a run but if you remap one you'll see a real world 45-50mpg on a run, the 350cdi is around 5-7mpg better on fuel.

The 220/250 are around 10mpg better than the 320/350.

The C350 would be my pick.

I'm not sure what your budget is but if it anything near the above then I'd also take a look at one of these if you can find one close, they're loaded with kit & a very nice way to while away 25k:

Or you can go for the smaller version which uses the Mercedes C220 drivetrain but means you land a newer car for your outlay.

Sorry, should of said the budget.. ideally want to stay under £6k.. dont want to spend too much on a car that will just rack the mileage up but would like something nice which attracted me to the merc

I had the same, but it was bloody quick through the gears!

No reliability issues, except the standard camshaft sensor....

I do about 25k a year in a MY09 C220cdi its alright, currently on 125k, engine wise the water pump and belt tensioner had a st fit at 100k but that's the only fault with the motor.

The rest of the car however,

Rear light wiring looms and clusters burning out due to under spec negative return wires.
Seats falling apart from 75k
Steering lock (electronic) burning out - has to be coded to the ignition module and key (car is in-drivable if this goes)
Key failing (car dead wont acknowledge)
Alloys corroding so bad they leak air if you don't get them sorted when changing tyres

Basically the car falls apart around the engine.

With that budget I'd go for a 320 but probably the previous generation as you can land a very nice car (personally I feel these are better built than the newer car.

Or the CLS with the same drivetrain which is a very nice place to while away the miles.

If you're going to get a 220 then definitely get a 250. Same engine but with a different remap.

It's a bit of a loud engine on idle but once you're driving it's great. I had a 2013 C220 and it was probably the best car I've owned. The only regret was not getting the 250.

Try and get a >2012 model as there was a significant facelift and the 220 engine produced 170bhp (and 210 with a remap) while still returning 70mpg if driven carefully.

I have a C220 coupe and it is excellent.
