W124 ignition key not turning

Just got home after a spin in my 1995 E36 auto. Parked on drive and put it into park, turned off engine and removed key.
Went into house for garage keys and came back out and find the ignition key won't turn.
Spare key is the same
Seems like the pawl is still engaged as if the car is not in "Park"
Any ideas please chaps.

Is there not a little hole beside the gear selector that you can stick a small screwdriver down to free the pawl and then move the selector back and forward and see if you can then get it to start.

Steering lock not properly disengaged - jiggled the wheel whilst holding key - hey presto!
