So had my 2012 SLK55 fitted with the X pipe and 2nd cats deleted. At high revs under load it sounds awesome - but that only happens rarely. You have to be pushing on a stupid speed to get there - in fact, unless I'm joining a motorway and can hold 2nd gear for a while......I don't really hear it roar at all! At lower revs its very muted and sat behind a C63 yesterday sounded as exciting as my mums fiesta in comparison.

So, Infinity Exhaust say the next step is to switch the back boxes for free flowing stainless ones - and hope the MOT tester/plod are not stupid about noise. Anyone done this or heard a car in this "state"? Seems like the way forward.

That's an option to liberate noise but I had the R171 (2005) with the different 5.4L V8 and apparently the rear boxes were already fairly liberal with noise reduction, not much 'scilencing' going on even with the standard back boxes.

However, the back boxes on the R172 might be very different.

A forum member on here called SLK32 had Kleeman headers put on which removes the mahoosive Mercedes primary cats. this makes the car so loud it is undriveable in his opinion, only quietened down with sport cats.

Removing the primary cats would require some coding out of the Lamba sensors, or recalibrating. probably a fair bit of work.

There are valves available that can be welded into exhaust pipes that are remote operated that basically opens a flap the size of your palm and these can be installed before the back boxes giving a lot of noise. Maybe ask infinity if they can get such things and graft them in.

This sort of thing, but get proper ones not Chinese rubbish
