I am new to roof boxes - should the rear bar be fitted behind the roof rail support or as per the photos in front/further forward - I think the box looks too far forward?

Does it matter as long as the rear of the box is clear of the open tailgate?

With that type of roof bar I have always fitted mine where it looks about right. Some cars have specific pick up points for the bars but looks like yours doesn’t. The distance between the bars will vary depending on the roofbox length anyway.
If you think it looks too far forward then move it back, making sure the tailgate still opens (as you said).

If you shift the box just a little further to the rear, the supports would be directly over the pillars
and aesthetically it would look better and still be well clear of the tailgate.
Don't shift it too far back or it will act as a sail and create a bit of drag and uplift (I know they all do to some extent).
It looks as if it's "up on it's toes" where it sits in your pic.

A bit late here but I have the same car as you with Thule bars and I sit the rear bars behind the middle support with the box just clear of the boot when open.

Thanks for the above - I fitted as suggested and no issues biggrin on a long run to South Wales and back.
